Jason Couch will undoubtedly make the TV show. Parker probably will too.
I'd like to see Patrick Allen make it, because whether or not you like him, he is one of the best, left side or right side.
(It almost seems like not enough lefties made the TV shows this season. Not that they aren't talented enough, but maybe the oil patterns weren't ... balanced well enough?? Should we bring back Len Nicholson? Do we need to?)

I'm watching it on XtraFrame and rooting for Joe C with the front 7!

Silly.
Don't you that all the left handers just happened to bowl good this one week?
As far as the ledger. There has been at least 2 left handed winners, the Korean and Ryan C. which is probably statistically correct for a season so far.

Jeff,
Not sure if its a balance of the ledger per se, but affirmation that it's not just balls that affect scoring pace on tour, or anywhere for that matter. My belief is that due to the balls being equal (or at least very close as Mo figured out last year how to make a plastic ball hook, and the only ones who used that were Z-man and WRW), that now the breakdown of the lanes from right and left are the reason that the left side seemingly has the nut this week.
There's less lefties to break down, carry down and the pattern stays longer for them, and the righties are more than likely running into carry down and are having to play straighter than they'd like.
I saw Jay last week at Carolier, he's throwing it really good regardless, and he grew up on the plastic era. Same with PBIII, and others. Should be an interesting show.

Hey everyone I know that this reply will get some people but this needs to be said...
Being a lefty bowler, as I am, there's no favoring the left side of the lane to the right. All you rightys complain about the lanes getting broken down and the carry down happens...lalalala. It's seems like just a lot of complaints. If the right side of the lane is sooooo bad then learn to bowl left handed and get all the complaints done. It's very aggrivating to here you guys complain about the same things. Get some new stuff already. I tried to bowl right handed for one whole league season and still had a good average with no major notice on the lanes being any different. Having so many bowlers playing the same line will lead to those problems. Try something new!!
Basically stop complaining about the lefty bowler so much. If your right side is so bad try ours for once!

3 left handed winners this year. Scott Norton is left handed and won a title.

Bill,
I like you in-depth analysis and I think you may have hit the nail on the head. least-wise, I am hoping this is the case. I really wondered if the PBA might be "interfering" on behalf the lefties. I certainly hop that is not the case.
I love that Parker is finally making the show. It must have been tough for him recently, but the man is as dogged as anyone out there - never giving up and always optimistic..

I have to side with Strider on this. I think you missed the boat on this one. I had no intention in my post of ever bringing this rotten subject up. I don't think you read all my text, especially,
- "I'd like to see Patrick Allen make it, ...., he is one of the best, left side or right side."
and
- "It almost seems like not enough lefties made the TV shows this season. Not that they aren't talented enough, but maybe the oil patterns weren't ... balanced well enough??"

Sorry, but you missed the boat as well. There was no lefty slam until pbaexp12 thought there was. An observation was made with a few lefty's making the show that the "normal" percentage of them might be accounted for. Anyway, lefty's make up what, 10-15% of the the population (I have no idea of the percentage within the PBA)? With that, the "norm" would be that one left hander would be on every two shows. With that, lefty's are probably over represented already, but no one is complaining about it. Maybe you conveniently missed this particular line from the OP?

The problems are with the lane maintence procedure. The lanes were conditioned to protect the surface, not to correct a potential imbalance between right & left handers or controlling the scoring pace.
As the game has evolved, oiling procedures became a way to control these factors, but at least the lane characteristics were taken to consideration.
Along came Kegel with there 'patterns'. This created 'how to play the lanes' and took away bowler's ability to show up and bowling....not needing the right equipment for the alledged patterns. Patterns then evolved into asymmetrical patterns which alledgedly brought nuetrality between both sides, which brought lane pattern mutation.
The PBA's theory in regards to right side to left side fairness is that if 7% of the field is left handed and that at the end of the tournament 7% of the money goes to left handers or a left hander...they do not care about fairness.
It is rather humorous that ALL the left handers bowled well this week. It is also humorous that after the US Open a left hander, Stephen Hardy, posted a thread on the PBA forum in regards to the chances of a left hander winning a major...it had many valid points. Then the following week, a tourney with plastic equipment, the left handers bowl well.
Anyways, it will always be that if a right handed bowler bowls well, they bowl well. If a left hander bowls well, the lanes were easy. If a right hander bowls bad, the lanes suck. If a left hander bowls bad, they suck.
The views and opinions expressed by myself are solely those of mine and NO one else, nor are they affiliated with anyone else.

Indeed if you look at the US Open, right handers had the advantage because there was more of a worn track area. Lefties seemed to be playing the twig, except Rhino.

is it me or ppl got bored by watching the 6 pin standing?
When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment
When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

I guess you're showing your age. That's plastic ball bowling for you. A touch high leaves a 4 (6 for lefty), and a little firm or outside leaves a 2-4-5 or bucket.

Seems like everytime I watch Ryan Ciminelle (sp) he bowls really well. Hardly ever misses the pocket, but gets beat by his "ability" to leave 7 pins and some 6's. Seems like he needs to learn to regulate his speed a bit. He doesn't need all that power to knock the pins down.

How difference was this year's pattern from last year's pattern when right hander Jeff Carter won?
Title: Re: Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship

Jeff Carter didn't win last year......Brian Ziesig did. Last years pattern was the Shark Pattern( 43' long and a lot of oil ). This years pattern was 34' and derived from the Cheetah Pattern.

First of all, if I was a betting man before the match I would have put 100 $ on Ryan Ciminelli. If anything, I thought he threw it the best out of the 4 with bad carry to show for it but picked his spares and his opponent was just a little better.
Parker seriously was annoying me with his thumbhole tampering. I've seen this guy for 20 years and never seen him do this before Horrible shot making in the last game also but still would have picked him over Jason Couch which to be honest didn't know if he could win another one or not but proved how much he wanted it and showed up when it mattered.

Last year was indeed the shark pattern, but the volume of oil was still low. I know Randy always mentions the lower volume, but most people don't realize how important low volume is to make the shot playable with plastic. They are only putting 10-12 ml total volume out for the plastic ball tournament. At that volume plastic will find enough friction to hit pretty good if you get it into a roll, and not too much off the side of the ball.
What happens with the plastic ball environment is that length of oil has a big impact on what style ( and hand ) wins. More direct angles carry better, but short patterns make it tough for guys who can't go real straight. Long patterns let everyone square up more, even the heavy handed guys. Couch had the best look on the short pattern because he used lots of speed and end over end roll to play very direct. The other guys who cover a few more boards are stuck with flat 10s or 4/6 pins if the get just a bit high. On longer patterns you get fewer 4 and 6's on high pocket hits, and half pocket carries better.
