yep. what will be next? cancel the whole 2nd half?  time to find a tv station that won't charge the PBA to broadcast.

Ask not for whom the bell tolls...........................

Kind of figured it was happening, but this is the most forthright sign of its demise that I have seen.

Having a PBA tournamnet at your center used to be a prestigious event, now its just an expense nobody can afford. Sad, sad day.

I live and bowl about an hour from Medford and am not surprised at all to hear this.  I had heard that they were having trouble getting local sponsors for the tournament, but did not expect the tournament to be cancelled this year, I just figured this would be the last year in Medford.

You are exactly right storm, ESPN and Lava are two different entities.  You are looking at 10-15%+ unemployment int this area, and the sponsorship $$$ the PBA requires is just not there.   The local sponsors (not just Medford, but all of southern Oregon as the region is very tight knit) do not see the worth in sponsoring a PBA stop just for title only when their dollars can be put to better use locally from a marketing standpoint.

TRUE.  However, if the PBA had any strength at all, they would put in the extra money to keep the fans and players happy.  How would you like it if your employer told you that you get the week off with no pay?  Most people would not be very happy, because money is tight.  Most the guys on tour are struggling to turn a profit after you consider traveling and living expenses.  This is obviously a sign that the PBA is failing, which we already knew.

What does ESPN have to do with the host center? The article clearly stated the following:

quote:
“The Professional Bowlers Association regrets to announce Lava Lanes in Medford will be unable to host the Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles event in 2010,”

ESPN and the host center are 2 different entities. The article indicates an issue with Lava Lanes. Absolutely nothing to do with the tour having to pay a network.

Because if they didn't have to pay ESPN to broadcast, they would have a surplus of money to handle this very thing.  Their biggest expense is the TV broadcasting.  That is something that no other sport has to deal with.

Puts you behind the 8 ball before they even get started.

BTW rumor is there are folks still waiting to get paid from the WSOB.  That can't be god and I doubt it is because of the Lanes.

It is terrible to see this happen to the PBA. But like all of You are saying, paying ESPN is too much of a expense. The PBA is going to have to find someone like CBS or FOX to take over. And it will have to be on a different night. I honestly think if the PBA was on during the week (taped if it has to be). People are home during the evenings during the week. Not everyone is glued to a TV on Sunday.

CBS and Fox would be way more expensive than what ESPN is charging the PBA.  Weeknight prime time is also more expensive than Sun. afternoon.

LPGA and other pro tours have lost sponsors and tourney's this is the sign of times.  1 out of 5 are unemployed.

The current economic downturn has hit EVERYTHING, believe me.  My former company laid off 1/3 of our professional services staff in early August (me included), and business isn''''t any better there.  There may be even more bloodletting around the holidays.  It doesn''''t surprise me at all.

If the economy gets much worse the PBA could fold I guess, and that would be a bad thing.

Have you ever thought aloud why the disconnect is? Some of it is the easy house conditions that are prevalent in the US. Another is the $$ that is not out there.

It would be ashamed if the highest level of the sport folded because you always need that measuring stick no matter how good you or I think we are.

Well, even if the PBA tour is cancelled, I still think league's and tournaments will be fine. The PBA seems to have a major disconnect with alot of house/tournament bowlers. Most of my friends who are into bowling and even some who are REALLY into bowling barely ever watch the tour. They still bowl 3-4 league's a week though. The PBA is a very small part of the bowling world in general. I will still continue to bowl regardless of what happens to the tour, as I am sure most people will. 99.9% percent of bowlers have no aspirations to go on tour. It sucks for people that do though and it is sad that this will probably be one of the only if not the only sport without a professional type tour/league ect.

The PBA bowling you tube hits are going to skyrocket!

I would probably put the opposite spin on the disconnect between the PBA and other bowlers.

In the day, the PBA bowlers were guys you had bowled against in you own house.

Now, they are like trick shot artists who bowl on unusual conditions to see who can handle them best and impress the masses. It is a dog and pony show that "does not honor the sport."

It is like having PT Barnum, or the Roller Derby come to town, only worse

Same small group of guys traveling from town to town - draw you own conclusions.
