Mika on the telecasts
« on: October 21, 2007, 11:09:03 AM »
Poor Brunswick

Anyone else notice that whenever he seems to be on TV he is using some discontinued ball or something that isn't exactly a good seller.

Let's review:

He shot 300 with a Stinger 2-piece particle (I'm sure Ebonite really sold a lot of those because of that show)

Last year he was on TV with a Blazing Inferno, which was discontinued and even when on the line didn't sell well.

There have been some others but the specifics escape me.  As a ball rep. Benoit has to be shaking his head.  He gets his guy to the show and can't get a new piece in his hand.

I just found it amusing today when I saw the Smokin Inferno in his hand.

Anyone else notice this?

Yes, i've also noticed that. On the bright side... At least he threw a Fury Pearl for the last shot

Each of those balls has one thing in common: They get down the lane easily.  I'd be willing to bet that he could have used the Pearl Fury, but it's quite a bit stronger than the Smokin' and Blazing.

I also remember him winning a few years ago with the Stinger. He must like playing as far outside as possible...

Noone said it was a bad ball....that would be stupid.

I am saying that as a staff member they prefer you to throw the new stuff on tv so they can sell more of them.

Mika keeps throwing balls that do Brunswick no good.....

bowlers on the pba tour who have contracts with a ball company will use the ball which they feel gives them the best look. does anyone remember the 1998 abc masters ? parker bohn III had just shot 300 with brunswicks latest and greatest( attitude III ). mike aulby comes in as the tournament leader and wins with a black blitz.....a urethane ball no less. i've been in tournaments where my most up-to-date brunswick ball was left in my bag because an older brunswick ball gave me a better look.

Makes me think of Danny Wiseman using an old MoRich Pioneer on a show last year.

Whatever will help them win.

Obviously he's using the ball that gives him the best look.....I was merely pointing out that the ball companies prefer the guys to use the "new" ball on the show if possible.

Many times guys have used one ball for all of qualifying and switched for the show.  Not saying he should...just finding it amusing that this is a trend with Mika.

If you paid any attention to the telecast, part of Mika's issues is no backend reaction.

Why are people reading my post to say that he isn't smart for throwing the new ball?

I was merely pointing out that it was amusing that he throws old stuff on the show...which most ball reps don't like.

I didn't question his ball selection...it obviously works....I was just pointing out something that I thought was amusing and probably a little frustrating for Brunswick.

I understand what you are saying jabs....some just don't get the inference.  I agree it would be a problem and after they pay the big $$$ for PBA registration it must be somewhat worrisome.

Personally, I found it quite humorous.  If I was a Brunswick rep, it most definitely would be troublesome.

Sort of like several years ago when I watched Brian Goebel win a tournament with a green reactive gyro pro.  That had to make ebonite guys want to pull their hair out.

I don't think that ball reps really mind it all that much, its buzz either way. I would think that Brunswick would rather staffers making and winning the show with balls of their choice than just using their latest and greatest.  Who can blame the man?  He found a ball that he matches up great and either bought a whole bunch or is getting the plant to make him his own.  I would do the same. I mean look at Tommy Jones he might use the latest ebonite piece, but its almost always low end. But you don't see Ebo getting upset because he has too much hand(his game doesn't fit) the NVS.

TJ spent almost a whole year throwing The One.  I believe he used a Total NV to win the TOC.  And an Angular One at the Masters (of course, he didn't win that one).  He did beat Voss with an Ice a few years ago.
