Very good description, you are about dead right. On impact the headpin does kick into the 2 and get forced back into the ball path JUST ENOUGH for the rest to unfold like you said. So in essence, the ball hit the head pin twice, once on initial contact and then again a moment after the headpin hit the 2 pin. This steered the headpin away from the 5 and in front of the 8. So while the ball does still get the 5, the angle the ball hits the 5 is straight on rather than just a touch to the right. 5 grazes the 8 on the way by from behind, and bingo, the wiggling 8. Like you said, it is a large combination of things happening at exactly the timing necessary, and also the ball was a pinch (and I do mean a pinch) high.
Gotta love technology, DVR means screen by screen shots with no broken video heads or damaged tape

D <~~~~ Used to be terrible wiffing 10 pins. Now through much practice, can wiff any single pin spare at any time.
