Motel 6 Poll
« on: January 13, 2008, 04:42:20 AM »
Did you notice on the telecast where people get to vote on the oil pattern used on the Motel 6 Rags to Riches?  The Shark pattern wasn't even a choice.  I know it's their tournament, so they can do whatever they want, but what's the deal with eliminating one of the patterns?

I know people here and other places point out that lefties don't tend to do well on Shark.  If that's the reason to eliminate the pattern, I think that blows.  Lefties tend to do really well on Cheetah.  If Shark is unfair for the lefties, isn't Cheetah just as unfair to the righties?  I know who one the tournament today, so don't even bother mentioning it.  I mean overall, not just the most recent tournament.

I think they said that there is 6 exempt lefties out of 59?  So, everything else being equal, lefties should win 10% of the time, or roughly one lefty should make the top 8 each week.  So on a pattern where lefties represent 50+% of the final 8 regularly, is that fair for the righties?  On Shark where lefties rarely make the final 8, I hear complaints and maybe that had an effect on Motel 6's decision?

This isn't meant to be the normal whine fest between righties and lefties.  But I'm just curious as to why the pattern lefties struggle on has been removed as a choice, but the pattern they love has been included.

I highly doubt it was removed because the lefties struggle on it. I the Rolls to Riches is supposed to be a strike fest and the Shark pattern is definitely not the pattern to use if you want to see high scores.

You might very well be right.  I just wanted to hear some opinions.  I wasn't even thinking about their short silly format.

I'm with Joe, it's about striking, not about laying it down on the 35 board, crossing 25 at the arrows, and getting it out to 14 at the breakpoint.

I'd like to see 'em use the Viper or Chameleon pattern.  You can see the hookin' guys hookin' it, the straight guys playing straight, they're much more flexible patterns.  Only downside to Chameleon is that PA is gonna win.

I'd like to see the medium patterns - Chameleon, Scorpion, or Viper, used just so no individual style is behind the 8 ball.  Don't force people deep or to the gutter, let their natural styles shine.
