new oil patterns for tour trials?
« on: June 12, 2006, 07:48:30 AM »
I heard that the five main PBA patterns were changed prior to the 2006 Tour Trials.  I live next to Hammond and I heard that there was friction outside on every pattern, they all played similarly, and that not many bowlers had to move way inside because the lanes held up so well.  From what I hear the patterns were adjusted and they also switched to a different kind of Brunsick oil.  Can anyone confrim/dispell these rumors?

I overheard some pro's this past weekend saying they played 10 on every damn pattern.  Not very much difference between each day/pattern aparently, sounds quite fishy.

Barnes and Duke will probaly kill them with the talk of how the modified patterns will play.  I'm hoping a young gun comes outta nowhere to prove to be a force.  The exempt tour while a good idea just doesn't seem to prove that all 64 guys are the best in the world.  The past few years it's been looking like there's a dozen and a half or so true stars of the tour and the rest of the guys aren't even close week to week without having 1 or 2 hot weeks the entire season.

Assuming these rumors are true, I would expect the most likely "big year" guys will be guys like Tommy Jones or Mike Machuga, guys that can play outside with a ton of hand. In other words, I don't think this plays into Duke's game nor Walter Ray's game. I think both will win a title somewhere along the way, but if the PBA truly is "equalizing" the patterns then that's going to favor a boomer who can get streaky hot.

I just don't understand the PBA's thinking, first making the regional patterns easier then the national ones, now this? I just don't get it....

We saw who dominated tour trials: guys without a lot of hand (relative to other tour players) that can play straight up by throwing hard (Haugen, Scroggins, Traber was close, Pratt was using plastic a lot, etc.). I think this points to the fact that guys that are a bit speed dominant will have an advantage if the do (or did) in fact modify the patterns.

I think the idea is not to find the best bowler, but to find the most watching fans. This is an entertainment business, not a bowling tournament!
