commissioner's exemption - Carmen Salvino
« on: January 03, 2005, 05:36:34 AM »
I actually heard this on the phantom radio show last week. Carmen Salvino got the Commissioners exemption in the Alabama tournament because.....

The PBA hasn't been back there in 40 years, and he's the defending champion!!! Isn't that a riot!!!

By the way - if you want to hear some funny stuff, listen to the phantom interviewing him on the show. It's hilarious!

Carmen Salvino Awarded Commissioner's Exemption
Seattle, WA - January 3, 2005

PBA Tour Commissioner Fred Schreyer announced today that the PBA Commissioner’s Exemption for the 2005 PBA Birmingham Open, Jan. 26-30, at Lightning Strikes in Trussville, Ala., has been awarded to PBA Tour Hall of Fame member Carmen Salvino.

Salvino, a PBA Charter Member, comes into the PBA Birmingham Open as the defending champion, having won the last event held in the greater Birmingham area, the 1965 Birmingham Open.

Salvino won 17 titles on Tour, as well as two Senior Tour titles. Among his 19 total titles, he won two majors, the 1962 PBA National Championship and the 1984 Senior PBA National Championship. He won multiple titles in five seasons.

“Carmen is one of the PBA Tour’s all-time greats and he has been a great ambassador for our sport,” Schreyer said. “He is the defending champion, so we thought it was only natural that we give a legend such as Carmen Salvino the opportunity to defend that title.”

Salvino, who resides in Schaumburg, Ill., amassed $669,750 over his PBA career. He was elected into the PBA Hall of Fame in 1975.

“The first thing I said to Fred Schreyer when he gave me this exemption was ‘You’ve got to admit that I have patience.’ I have waited 40 years to defend this title,” said Salvino. “I can’t thank the PBA enough for recognizing the bowlers of the past. The PBA has given me a day to bask in the limelight. I’ll be like a kid again.”

Salvino will join the 64-bowler field comprised of 58 exempt bowlers, four non-exempt PBA members and one amateur who come from the weekly PBA Tour Qualifying Round.

The 2005 PBA Birmingham Open takes place Jan. 26-30 at Lightning Strikes in Trussville, Ala. The finals will air live on ESPN Sunday, Jan. 30 at 12:30 p.m. ET.

The PBA Tour begins the second half of the 2004-05 season Wednesday in Mesa, Ariz., with the 2005 PBA GEICO Open. The live televised finals will air on ESPN Sunday, Jan. 9 at 1 p.m. ET.

No funnier than Marshall Holman at Klamath Falls nor Dick Weber in another recent tournament.

Good for publicity, I guess, but in general, a waste of an entry.

Hey, I like all those guys, a lot, but their entries only make sense from the point of view of advertising.

Before I start my comments, I should mention that I'm 59 years old and lived all my life in the Chicago area before moving to Dallas in 1994.  I'm certainly acquainted with the the name Salvino, but not quite old enough to have bowled against him when the Traveling Leagues were THE Leagues in Chicago.
(P.S.  My first 300 was with a used Columbia Yellow Dot that was used by Carmen Salvino -- I bought it for $30 at Hal Lieber's pro shop on North Avenue-- a frequent haunt of C.S. when he was doing a lot of his drilling and experimentation with bowling balls)

That being said, you can call me a fan of Carmen Salvino-- (I also enjoyed his book of a few years back, Fast Lanes).  I have to say I think the exemption is a great idea.  To my way of thinking, it's much the same as the Marshall Holman/Dick Weber exemptions.  Bowlers have enough problems getting recognition --- what's wrong with recognizing some of the stars of the past???  It's not so much as having a legitimate chance to actually WIN the tournament-- it's more of a honorarium.  By the way, although his bowling skills may not be what they once were, I'm sure he hasn't lost any of his sense of humor.  He's always been a great ambassador of the sport. Hats off to Carmen!!!

So you like this guy????
Yeah, he treats me sweet -- I met him at a bowling alley.         (Matchstick Men)

Well, he's gonna go in prepared.  He's been practicing a lot at a local northwest Chicago burb bowling alley the last few weeks.  And I think he's in better physical shape than half the exempt tour.  I remember seeing him do push ups on the BACKS of his hands a few years ago on TV.  His chances of getting into match play are pretty low, but it will make for an interesting round of 64, that much is assured.

Tom Candiotti was a Major League Baseball player, good knuckle-baller.  The last few years he's bowled the regionals here in the western region.  He's a nice guy, very approachable and humble and serious about his bowling game.  He seems to genuinely enjoy the sport of bowling and is always quick to tip his hat to the atheletes (duck!) of the PBA.

He struggled yesterday to get the ball to the hole.  Kept missing inside.
