Before I start my comments, I should mention that I'm 59 years old and lived all my life in the Chicago area before moving to Dallas in 1994. I'm certainly acquainted with the the name Salvino, but not quite old enough to have bowled against him when the Traveling Leagues were THE Leagues in Chicago.
(P.S. My first 300 was with a used Columbia Yellow Dot that was used by Carmen Salvino -- I bought it for $30 at Hal Lieber's pro shop on North Avenue-- a frequent haunt of C.S. when he was doing a lot of his drilling and experimentation with bowling balls)
That being said, you can call me a fan of Carmen Salvino-- (I also enjoyed his book of a few years back, Fast Lanes). I have to say I think the exemption is a great idea. To my way of thinking, it's much the same as the Marshall Holman/Dick Weber exemptions. Bowlers have enough problems getting recognition --- what's wrong with recognizing some of the stars of the past??? It's not so much as having a legitimate chance to actually WIN the tournament-- it's more of a honorarium. By the way, although his bowling skills may not be what they once were, I'm sure he hasn't lost any of his sense of humor. He's always been a great ambassador of the sport. Hats off to Carmen!!!

Yeah, he treats me sweet -- I met him at a bowling alley. (Matchstick Men)
