Title: new pba patterns
Post by: jonbowler298 on May 12, 2009, 03:56:45 AM
How would you feel if they changed the patterns totally? It may be happening soon.

How much is there you can really do with changing the patterns?  The length of the pattern, the volume used, and the lane surface all dictate things more than the actual shape of the pattern on the pro tour.  They changed all the patterns this past season, and it only took them one week on each pattern to figure them out again.

Most of the pros have bowled on patterns ranging from 30 odd feet (like cheetah) to 50 feet (the old Tournament Of Champions pattern) and if you get do good on the two ends of the spectrum the chances are you are also good enough on the in between zone

All they need to do is change the oil volume on each pattern.

A few years ago I was told that each pattern has 3 different volumes to begin with. I believe by changing the oil volume substantially these patterns will play dramatically different.

They need to go to the pattern they use at the Peterson. Oil the lanes with a mop, bucket, and a squirt bottle. Anybody who averages 200+ on that is pretty darn good.

You don't even think that the pattern doesn't matter, you give them practice on it, and they will burn a shot that they like.

All they need is to see a graph of it and they know where they want to start, then it is just the surface that dictates where they go from there.

US Open is as tough as it gets and if you took the hacks out and made it a regular PBA event (Where the pros are breaking it down properly) they would still average 210+ on a flat shot.

They are the best in the world for a reason.

+1

Give an excellent, accurate, consistent bowler as much practice time on pattern as the pros seem to get, and they will create a good look.  They are still all of the above.

How about having a completely different pattern every week, and not telling anybody what it is until the tv show, and then only show it to the TV audience?

With the new Earl pattern the averages were still kinda high (although a little lower than normal) so I am not sure how much difference it will make. They will still find a way to be around 225.

Having "named" patterns only continues the misconception of what a pattern is "supposed" to play like, which IMO hurts bowling as a whole, preventing bowlers from learning how to play what is given to them rather than expecting something and not getting it.

If one sees and practices on it often enough then they will start scoring well on it. So I don't think it makes much difference (other than making me work harder in PBAX Leagues)

And if you put the Scorpion Pattern down for a house a shot eventually people would figure out how to score on it.

I heard this also.  I was talking to PB III after he lost to Mallott this year on TV and was poking his brain about the patterns.  Apparently there are tons of variations, and he said they usually tweak it during the tournament too.  The guys will see how the pattern plays out the first day or two, then tweak it if needed.  The micro-adjustments pros make are something to behold *bows*

There really isnt a need to change the patterns themselves, mainly because they never play the same from bowling center to bowling center. Lane surface, topography, weather, etc...all come into play each week making the pattern take on different characteristics. Changing volumes makes a difference as well, but the most important thing is the lane topography....thats what forces us to certain parts of the lane.

For the most part, guys really dont pay much attention to the patterns. Basically we just use the practice sessions to get an idea on how it might play, then allow the lane itself to tell us what to do during qualifying and match play. Once competition begins, the pattern itself pretty much gets thrown out the window...it all depends on how it breaks down and who you follow from pair to pair.

I don't think they need to change the patterns.  I think another way to make it a little more of a challenge would be to not let them practice on the tv pair.  Give maybe 2 shots on each lane.  They allow them to much time on the lanes to burn the line in.

A 201 to 193 win is less appealing than a 269-270 win.. Better ratings, etc..

The patterns have been modified from last season. Check some of the regional scores and the PBA forums.  The scores are way down and the general consensous is all of the patterns are alot different despite being named the same and have the same lengths.  I've only played Cheetah and Shark on the new modifications and they are WAY different than the general expectations of them.
