Norm Duke POY...
« on: March 30, 2007, 10:18:41 AM »
Who agrees? I figured he was going to lose being down to Ameleto and how well hes been bowling. I then figured Doug Kent had it locked against Tommy Jones since he was up 3-1.

Being that I thought Norm was going to lose, I figured Kent would go ahead and have that extra push for POY. Well now its just Duke that is left.

With Duke being the last of the POY talks, he has to be a sure bet to win POY.

It's still too close to call for me.  If Duke had actually bowled more tournaments, I'd call him a lock.  In those seven tournaments he withdrew from, figure he'd make the top 16 or 8 at least three or four times.  That'd give him another 30K points or more, putting him over the 200K mark with Barnes and Wes.  Also put him up another $10K or so in earnings.  Plus he wouldn't have been out so many weeks.  As it is, it's three titles with a big stretch of nothing versus two majors with a big (big) stretch of nothing.

As much as I like PDW, by virtue of the fact that Kent won two majors versus his one major and one standard, I don't see him being in it.  Couch, PA, and Rash, who all have two titles (I miss anyone?) aren't in it as far as I'm concerned.  The other three, even PDW, had better overall seasons (not to mention PDW's major versus their not-majors).

It's Kent and Duke all the way.  If Duke can make the show, I give him the edge.  Otherwise my vote (that I don't actually get) is for Kent.  Duke's extremely popular, the PBA goes out of its way to put him in the spotlight, so it's gotta be close.

I think Kent has it as of this moment due to his two Majors (with a capital M).  Duke is still alive in the TOC and if he wins it's his for sure.  Maybe even if he places second.  Of the other still alive in the TOC,  Barney, Reyes, WRW, and TJ all have other titles this year and would put themselves in serious contention with a TOC win.  Especially Reyes who has 2 other shows and a TV 300 to go with this 1 win.

I forgot about the tournaments Duke missed, but at the same time he has 3 titles this year in less tournaments than anyone else. To me that is far more impressive than the two majors. Im not taking anything away from Kent because he is an awesome bowler, but if Norm missed 7 events out of 21 then that is 14 that he bowled in, and out of 14 he won 3 titles. Correct me if Im wrong.

If Norm wins the TOC he is the player of the year.  4 wins including a major (argue POC as a major all you want - still 4 wins).

If Norm doesn't win Doug Kent is player of the year.  2 majors as compared to Norm's 3 standard events gives Doug the edge.

i think that if Duke wins than, you can say that he deserves the POY award, if not I think that Kent's 2 majors is too much to over come

I agree if Duke wins TOC, he deserves POY. If not my vote is for Kent.

Duke made the show.  I think no matter what he should get POY.

Lets not forget he finished 5th at the US Open.

If we have learned anything over the past 3 seasons, titles do not mean everything.  All aspects are taken into consideration.  Average, earnings, MP appearances, etc.  Duke is ahead of Kent in every category besides one (earnings).  I believe it will be Duke, because he has been more consistant over the year, even though he missed a stretch of the season.

Gotta vote for Duke now.  He finished eighth in points, only 15K behind Kent, in spite of placing 64th in seven events.  Outside of those events he withdrew from, he had a 36th place finish i the MC Classic and 40th in the Ace HW.  Then 21st in the Worlds.  Otherwise he's top 10, top 15 pretty much every week.  Kent didn't crack the top  16 most of the time.  Missed the top 32 a lot, too.  I'd like to vote for Kent, he had a career year and this is probably his best shot at being PoY, but I just can't do it.

Duke or Kent?  Toss up!  Either man could win without much argument...

Kent should win it. 2 Majors in one season. Very tough to do.

I think Norm should win it, because of the number of appearances vs. Kent, higher average, etc.

Two majors in a year is very impressive, though, way to go Doug!

I wouldn't mind if either won, truth be told.  A pretty tight year for POY, eh?
