Norm Duke...POY?
« on: March 31, 2008, 12:32:12 AM »
I was just thinking to myself about last season and this season, and i realized that last years POY, Doug Kent, won two events last year, both being Majors. Now i know that the system for the POY honors has changed and everything, but if we were still on the old system, how many of you would consider Norm Duke as the top contender for the POY Honors, seeing as he has won two of the four majors on the Denny's PBA Tour?

Now im not trying to say that Chris Barnes does not deserve the award, for i do believe that he was the best and most consistent bowler all season long. I just want to know what others think about would happen if we were on the old POY system?

I think it'd be a tough case to make.  Duke's 15th on the points list.  Last year, Kent was 4th.  I'll be the first to admit that Kent really bookended the season and did merely ok the rest of the time, but if I had to vote, I'd have a tough time voting for Duke this year.  He's only bowled well for a month, really.  He was, what?  51st in points going into the WC?  I just couldn't vote for the guy who had a 51st place season roughly 3/4 of the time.

Of course, I don't get to vote.  I didn't before and I don't get to now.  I can't discount what Duke's done, it's phenomenal.  But I couldn't vote for him.

To continue off what shelley said, I wouldn't give Duke POY consideration only because he had more DNPs versus tournament starts. I don't think you could give anyone in any sport a POY or MVP is they didn't play a majority of the season.

Yeah, I'd have to agree w/both replies so far.  I'm a big Duke fan, but he didn't bowl enough.  I think they are getting it right.  Walter Ray had a good year also.  There's a lot of pressure on these guys to succeed & they made a lot of shows this yr.  JMO.

Not exactly the argument I intended to present, but I see your point.

Tell that to Tiger Woods.

If you think about it as the Most Valuable Player, it'll always be Tiger Woods.  Tiger's done as much for the PGA as the PGA has done for Tiger.  If you think about who brings the most value to the PGA, you can't not say Tiger Woods.  While everyone else may really only be gunning for second place, I don't think they'd go so far to say they wished Tiger weren't out there.

If the PBA members were still voting on Bowler of the Year, I think it would probably go to WRW, but it would be an interesting vote. Here are the stats (except for the newly created category of "Bowler of the Year Points":

Points: WRW 1st, CB 2nd
Earnings: WRW 4th, CB 5th
Cashes: CB T-1st (21/21), WRW T-5th (20/21)
Match Play: CB 1st, WRW 2nd
TV Shows: CB 1st, WRW 2nd
Average: WRW 1st, CB 2nd

You could easily make an argument for either to be Bowler of the Year in a vote.

While Norm Duke has been my favorite nationally touring/exempt player for a number of years and while his winning two majors this year is impressive, I'd still not consider him for player of the year.

It's the "year" part that is important.  Barnes, Williams, and Scroggins were constantly in the mix of things this year, all year. You could even make a case for Rhino Page if he had won another title. Because there wasn't a bowler making as many shows as these three, a bowler constantly in the mix of things, it was easier for Kent to win POY last year with the same title resume as Duke this year.

To me it would be like giving Mark Roth bowler of the century based solely on his performance in 1978 alone: 8 titles in one season.  That's not to discount all of Roth's other achievements, but I'm just trying to emphasis that as bowler of the century should be awarded do to longevity over a number of years, bowler of the year should be for consistent success over the entire year.
