PBA doubles
« on: December 06, 2007, 09:50:09 PM »
I just noticed on the PBA schedule that in January they are running an exempt doubles tournament in Las Vegas. The PBA is really going old school this year. Maybe in an attempt to produce ratings???

in my opinion the pba needs to really go old school and change several things about the way tournaments are run:

1) no 64 man exempt field. an open field should be available. if an exempt field is necessary make the number higher, say 80.

2) a normal tournament should have the old style format-----everyone bowls 18 games of qualifying( three, 6 game rounds ). the top 24 players advance to matchplay----one game against each opponent.

3) the telecast is a 5 man stepladder final with a segment for instruction or some tech tip.

I agree about getting rid of the exempt field and going to a "rabbit" squad like back in the day.

I like the exempt tour, I just don't like the critera of how you get in and how you can be kicked out. What they should have done is have an acclumating point system insted of a year to year point system. This way, a hall of famer that has a bad year or misses a lot of events won't be kicked off. Brian Voss comes to mind. I also do not like the regional point leaders getting tour spots. I'd rather have the tour trials open to more spots that way more international players have a chance of making the tour. I'd also like the tour opened to 96 spots. A good portion of these spots can be opened from the PTQ.

i got an OLD/NEW SCHOOL idea.

Use a 12 month rotating points fomula. (same setup that the USTA uses)

Top 40 in points are in.

The top 20 from the PTQ advance to the rd of 64.

The last 4 major winners (if major winner is already eligiable then next available finnisher in standings)

This is your rd of 64. 2 six game blocks. Cut to top 32.
Here is the fun part. You can go one of several ways.
32 man bracket or
6-8 game block then cut to 16.
Normal matchplay this round. Position rd 1 gm.
cut to top 5 for the show.

Im trying to come up with a different set up for the show. when i figure it out i will post it here.
