I have to disagree about the notion that Morich gear doesn't suit Walter. Walter loves throwing the ball straight. Morich gear tends to be very strong and rolly. I think the match is perfect. Now, I think Walter could win with just about anything, and, through the years, he has. I think Storm is about the only company I don't remember seeing him use at one point or another. I just think he's running into the same thing that a lot of guys have. The TV show plays differently than the rest of the week. I mean, c'mon, he led the tourney by something like 300 pins, so his match up with his gear worked great all week long. Don't let struggles on the show make you think that he's got the wrong gear.

Point taken on his results during the week, but the biggest challenge for a guy that throws it straight is to get the ball through the front part of the lane and when you don't, well you saw today what happens.  My opinion, there's a reason WRW didn't make TV for the better part of the first season he used that equipment and it was only when he went back to throwing 16 lbs that he started making shows again.  If you've watched the PBA the past couple of seasons, the flat 10s have cost WRW 3 or 4 titles because he outbowled his opponent, but couldn't carry.

Today was just the ultimate example of what I've been seeing from him the past couple of seasons on TV.  His look during the week must be better because he wouldn't be making TV if it wasn't.  But nearly everytime he's been on TV the past couple of seasons, carry has cost him and my opinion is that if he used something a little weaker with a symmetrical core on TV day, he'd be close to 50 titles by now. So I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one, Gene.

WRW is currently using 15lb equipment.  Your correct he went from 15lb to 16lb but then switched back.  He says this on his web site's questions and answers section.

I find it very difficult to say that he would of won more tourney's if he was using symmetrical equipment.

Their's been many times when WRW has had carry problems.  He had that long before his using MoRich equipment.

Take a look at his carry the last tourney he won this season.  How was his carry then?   I just don't buy into the theory that strong asymmetrical equipment is why WRW has carry problems from time to time.

I also agree with you that he lost against his opponents on several occasions because of bad carry.  Keep in mind that WRW would rather stay on line and hit the pocket than to make small tiny adjustments on ten pins.  Again he's said this on his question and answers section.  A lot of the PBA players will move a board or two with their feet or target when getting ringing or flat tens. This can be a dangerous approach in a one game playoff.  WRW has said he would rather not adjust for those types of leaves because 1" higher or lighter into the pocket will get strikes.  His main focus is hitting the pocket.

I remember reading that WRW had been practicing a two handed release. Has he said anything about switching to that full time or is he staying right handed?????

An 8-10 is not the best shot in the world, obviously there was no drive through the pins. AN 8-10 is not a tap, it isn't even close. The ball was flat

the 8-10 split came on the left lane....the lane with the shark pattern. 44' of oil translates to a slick surface. although walter ray mentioned the pins being off spot( he's looked at thousands of racks over the years ) i believe he was never really comfortable with his look on that lane. he may have tried to to use the hold left and sped up to keep it on line-----a rocket to the pocket. we'll never know. at least he made it to another title match.....the other exempt players and us armchair bowlers were watching......

Disclaimer:  This observation is purely from memory, and in no way is meant to bash any equipment or say that one company is better then another.

Though I don't have any hard evidence except for memory, I remember watching Walter dominate with Brunswick equipment.  Now I know that it is said that coverstock gives the largest proportion of hook characteristic, and thus (since MoRich uses Brunswick coverstocks) it could be surmised that he should be able to dominate as well with MoRich equipment.  But, I have to admit that I cannot recall off the top of my head a time when Walter had the problem with carry that he has now.  I would love to see him go back to Brunswick, which I think would be a mutually beneficial relationship.  It would be nice to see them on TV more often, and it would be nice to see if his carry would increase.

The 8-10 was on the right hand Cheetah lane. They even commented on how WRW chose to finish there for that reason.

Until today...I had Chris Barnes wiffing a 10 to cost him the TOC saved on my DVR for anytime I needed a laugh.  Today I have something new.  I've watched it 6 times already.

Well, both of them had a few re-racks.  I was at the show today.  After the telecast they had the guys out looking at both lanes.  Don't know if they actually did anything to them before the doubles taping.

I don't think WRW carry is any better or worse now then it was years ago.  He's not going to have Tommy Jones carry!  He's going to get more 10 pins than a lot of the pro's on tour.  However, he's also going to hit the pocket more often than the other pro's on tour.

I remember looking back at the roll to riches.  I think it was in 06' when Norm Duke lost to Doug Kent because of poor carry.  WRW also lost to Doug Kent because of poor carry.  It happens!

If you look at the replay, you will see that he barely got the 5 out and the ball almost hit the 10 going away.  It could have easily been a 5-7-8-10 so I'd say it was a good break.

+1 - It wasn't the best shot he'd thrown, but an 8-10?  I'd be asking for a recount - Yikes!

It makes me wonder how well the machines at the National Bowling Stadium are maintained...

We must realize something else though about Walter.  He's not the young guy out there anymore.  He's still great, accurate as hell, but he can't put anything on the ball like he used to.  Without the power of today's equipment he would not have as many titles as he does now.  He's very accurate, intelligent, and know's how to use today's equipment to his advantage in every way possible.

Can't we say that about more than half the bowlers on tour? If it wasn't for the ball reps half of the guys out there wouldn't even get close to making show. Lets not forget that Walter ran away from the field during the week. He is still a great, great bowler and if not for the bad break or the twitch that made him throw it a little faster we wouldn't be having this conversation.

That said I would rather have seen Wes or Chris win.
