Hello all, I recently rented the movie and watched it about 5 times last night - Great Documentary. I recently started bowling and this is a great heads up on what went on in the bowling world in the years past.
So I live in Sacramento, CA...no more than 10mins from Wayne Webb's shop. I have gone there once coz I knew who he was but I never made any fuss about it mainly coz I dont like stirring things up around celebs. Anyways, oblivious to his real past, after watching this movie, Im thinking "man, I was standing next to a GREAT!" Despite his set backs, he has many accomplishments that deserve regard. I think I will start going to him for my bowling needs. Sure he's about 20bucks more than the other guy, but I believe in supporting those who truly made a difference and i believe Webb made a difference in bowling.
Sorry for the bloggish post, hope u enjoyed =)

Its tough to not sound "bitter" (don't like whiney) when the powers above decide to change the rules and take your life's career from you.

wayne is a great guy no matter what anyone says. the movie did make him seem more depressed than he actually is. he conducts hisself very well around fans though

they really did make him seem sad and bitter. especially since he was a great bowler and did win a ton of titles. i would have liked to have seen a part on hungry young players just starting. i think the chris barnes portion didn't really accomplish that. i mean wrw and pete are two accomplished players towards the end of their careers. i liked the movie but i think it lacked a little for grit.

Hehe, its nice to see that he still has a good fanbase. He actually looks in better shape now then he did in the movie. I didnt know he was going to participate in the tour this year. Hopefully I can do some business with him and get to know him before he goes off. Maybe he can coach me a lil too =)

i remember him been in erie doing karaoke after bowling in the lounge. him and guppy troup had the crowd rolling. I do believe that some of the former stars of the pba got the short end of the stick, BUT, something had to be done or there would no longer be a pba tour!!

Wayne is a very cool guy, he lived in Vegas right after getting off the tour not by choice as stated. I met him about 8-9 times going into his wayne webb pro shop and running into him at tournaments locally, he never complained about the new owners of PBA he realized that times change and stated he was tired of all the travel anyway.
I watched him use the same ball playing up the 1 board getting decent pocket carry decide that in order to win he needed a change of lines. On the very next shot he moved inside and played the 6 th arrow to win, he is that good that if he needs to move he is fearless. I am positive he can and will win a pba title again regionals most likely but national stops he could on the right day. He might be short guy in stature but has the heart of a champion and if you bowling against him he wants to take you out period.
This is what it takes to win the heart of wayne webb, it does help to have his talent too.

I still remember when he was in the Beaumont area...basically out of one house, you had him, Ozio and Mark Williams. Both Ozio and Williams had brothers that were no slouch either. And in any week that they missed the cut, you knew that you might be facing them in the Thursday late scratch league at Crossroads. It wasn't just the siblings either- Wayne's wife at the time was a 200+ bowler herself...
What I find impressive with Wayne is that he still has the competitive drive he had sixteen years ago, and there may actually be more fire in his belly. His performances when he was able to bowl a national stop this season showed he still has the abilities...
-
I couldn't believe how much he sounds like NASCAR's Robby Gordon. I swear they have the same voice.

From watching the show, I didnt get the impression the PBA ended his career by changing the format. From what he said and what they showed it looked more like alcohol and gambling ended his marriage and then took him out of the running in the PBA.
-
my friends all agreed that wayne webb looked like he had one of the worst lives we have ever seen. it was like you knew they were gonna play some really sad music right as he appeared on the screen

The reason he is no longer succesful is becasue he cut his mullet! Very much like Sampson in the bible. He will need to grow that mullet back to win! LOL! When he does grow it back, others bowlers will fear the mullet!

With no disrespect intended toward Mr. Webb, I would
not expect him to stay in one area very long. It is
not his track record. He had two very good deals
in Las Vegas, and they were not good enough to keep
him here.
After watching the movie, I got the feeling WW leaving LV was the best thing for him...sounds like he gambled (and lost) much of $1.3 million in earnings while there. Remember when the interviewed him while at the tournament in LV, he said the best thing he could do is stay in his room that way he wouldn't lose any more money.
His tale is a very sad one that has happened way to often in the sport of bowling...guys that have dedicated their whole life to bowling and now can't seem to find their place in life with the "new" PBA...sad to the point of almost being pathetic in that some of the greatest to ever play the game are just being "swept under the rug" and forgotten...

It just might be me but I have no sympathy for a person who makes over a million in earnings and is broke now. I mean come on yes its sad but I mean come on....There is this little thing called self-control. Dont get me wrong he was and still is one of the Greats but do I feel bad for him? No.
Maybe him and MC Hammer should start a club.
Gambling is a disease, same as drug and alcohol addiction, they all go hand in hand...unless you've had an addiction or been around someone who has had one, you really wouldn't understand it...

That milion dollars that Wayne Webb made during his hey day isn't what it may seem. It's not like a Million $$$'s was dumped in his lap one day and he was broke the next. Figure it out. Let's say you earn 50k for 20 years (Webb joined the PBA in 1975 and won his last title in 1997), there's your million dollars, but I know many, many people that are in the same boat as WW and who are responsible people. Yet, they live basically pay check to pay check because their earnings go to pay for the mortgage, the 2 or 3 cars, credit card debt, big screen tv, etc, etc.
So, WW wasn't very prudent with his $$$ but neither are most Americans. In fact, according to the latest data the average American last year saved a NEGATIVE amount.
WW gave me a lot of inspiration and excitement when he was on tour and seemed to make the show more times than not. My hat's off to him for giving his life to a sport from which very, very few can make a living.
My God, Michael Jackson's flat broke (makes WW look like a Saint!).

Also keep in mind that it was a million in earnings, not profit. $50,000 per year for 20 years, minus about $20,000 a year in expenses equals.........not nearly as much as you would think

gambling is not a disease. its simply a lack of control. america has this great thing of making almost everything out there a disease. like obesity. come on people control yourselves

Jeff Carter hit the nail on the head. 50K back in Wayne's early days was showing a decent profit but as the years go by look at what happened to the cost of living. 50K doesn't look as nice any more. I was a member when the PBA was bought out and we weren't sure if there was going to be a tour at all.
The movie in my opinion gave a pretty good depicition of how the tour was back then.
I mean come on WRW wins the tournament and then he gets to chop ice off of his motorhome to drive it away.
I could bet you wouldn't see a MAJOR athlete from any other sport doing that!!!!!

Just leave it in the bag.

Best ending in a movie. Ever?! Loved that movie.
