Randy's tip
« on: November 24, 2009, 09:46:20 AM »
Did anyone see Randy's tip of the week on the Chameleon telecast? Finally is explaining for years on the shows about how the pros "work the inside part of the ball and amateurs work the outside part of the ball. This has always bugged me when he said this and all I got was a "wth?"
So really his tip was to "take a page out of Chris Barnes ball and hold it like this". All he is doing is placing his thumb/hand/finger position inside his body vs placing it outside the body. I never understood the "clock positions" so I will spare that. Randy holds the ball like Chris when he bowls anyways. He then says "don't hold it like this!". He was putting his starting hand position away from his body. What's funny about this tip to me is the fact that I have a show from the 80's when Nelson Burton Jr. is giving a tip stating the exact opposite what Randy is doing and Nelson is holding is hand away from his body and also gives an example of Mark Roth holding it somewhat similar to Nelson just obvious different techniques past that. So they were obviously good bowlers.

Now Randy was really exaggerating what not to do. If you saw it then you should know very few goes to the length of holding it in such an uncomfortable position.

In his back swing he explains how to play the inside part of the ball which all that really is getting "behind or underneath the ball". He may show how your supposed to do this motion with your release while "playing the inside part of the ball" but all your doing is getting behind it and it is how you get behind it what should naturally dictate your release. Also, most amateurs do play the inside part of the ball unless they are beginners or not very good bowlers, otherwise I really don't understand what the hell Randy is talking about half the time anymore and I hear he coaches people. I hope he is a better coach then explaining it on the airways.

You work the part of the ball that you need to in order to do what you need with the ball you have in hand, on the lanes on which you are bowling.

There is never any "you must always do it this way". NEVER! Anyone preaching such should be immediately ignored, including Randy.

Unless he has another hour to explain what you personally should do, I'd ignore Randy's TV lessons. A 30 second lesson will always be worse than useless without detailed follow-up analysis and discussion. This is solely an entertainment section of the program.

I agree with charlest all the way. But you have to ask yourself "Where is Randy's bowling career today? Everytime Randy speaks during the show we try to mute him as much as we can. LOL. Buts that just my opinion..

Let us not forget that the majority of the tips that Randy has in the episodes are not exactly designed for the serious bowler.  They are more for the beginning or common joe bowler

Randy's tips are gross over-simplifications meant for the beginning to average bowler.  But they usually make some semblance of sense.  I actually already did what he was talking about with keeping your arm in a neutral, relaxed position to start the downswing, then bringing it into place in the backswing to keep the arm loose and free.

All Randy really means with his whole "work the inside part of the ball" spiel is this:  http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/9926/workinsideofball.jpg  (Sorry for the crude drawing)  Get the wrist cocked to put your fingers closer to your body compared to the wrist -- when the ball comes off your hand, you'll get more revs because your fingers are lifting from further underneath the ball.  Just take a look at Rash, Malott, etc. to see what he means.  Great for hooking it a bunch, not so great for playing straighter angles.  Watch how Norm Duke manipulates his hand position and release when playing it straight or hooking it to see another example.
