Who are the PBA's greats?
« on: March 07, 2006, 06:22:59 AM »
I was thinking a bit about this the other day, so I figured I'd post to see what all of you had to say. We all know that the exempt PBA players are all great in their own right. They each have talent the likes of which many of us can only dream. Still, obviously, some pros stand out over others. With that in mind, which CURRENT PBA pros to you guys think can truly be classified as greats? What I mean to say is, who are the guys that, if they walked away and retired tomorrow, you could say, yeah, that guy was one of the best?

Guys like Walter Ray, Parker, Duke, Weber, Monacelli and Voss come to mind right away for me. Those guys have built up impressive numbers of titles over considerable years. But where do guys like Couch, Tommy Jones, Patrick Allen, Chris Barnes, Steve Jaros, etc fit in? Let me know what you guys/gals think. Who do you all think are true PBA greats?

Tommy Jones can retire tommarrow and he'll always be remember for his 15-0 streak on television and his 8 titles in 2 seasons, both those records will live on regardless of what the future holds for him.  Chris Barnes has Potential but in my book hasn't amounted to what he was/is "capable of" yet...
Couch will have to win a couple more titles imo before we put him in the history books.
I also believe patrick allen has the potential to do great things he just needs time.  As far as others go, i see truly great careers ahead of michael fagan and mike machuga, for i feel these two guys are the future of the pba.

I can agree with Ray, Parker, Duke and Voss.  I also believe Tommy Jones and Patrick Allen have the most upside, to become great.  As far as the others, no one really jumps out at me.

Sounds like a concensus here. I think people forget Jason Couch because of the "what-have-you-done-for-me-lately" mentality. The man won and defend a major title three times in a row. The feat alone makes him a great in my eyes. Granted, I'm biased being left-handed.

I agree with the other posts.

I feel a certain amount of tour wins is what defines how great a player was or is.

I don't know what that number is but I feel it shouldn't be less than 20.  No doubt Tommy Jones has had a great streak going but can he do what Parker Bohn has done.  PBIII is a great bowler period.  Think about how tough it is to win 1 tournament much less 30 something.

I feel a better question would be which bowlers will win more than twenty tournaments in there carrear?

There are some really good bowlers on tour.  I guess you could say there all great because they have made it that far but the elite is another story.

Barnes, TJ, PA, Mika, Robert Smith, maybe Mike Wolfe are the next generation of "greats".  I think they'll be the ones winning most often in the next 10 years, the way guys like Duke, WRW, Voss, Bohn, and PDW have been for the last 10+ years.

Current greats are pretty much those listed, WRW, Duke, Voss, Couch, Lawrence, PB3, PDW.  I think Monacelli is getting past his prime.  He was a great, very dominant for a lot of the 90s, but I think he's moving into the twilight of his career.  Still, I root for him every week, and I love watching him bowl.

WRW, Parker, Duke, and Voss.

Oh, excuse me... They are not only the greatest on the tour today, but they are all members of my fantasy team!!!

If you have TJ on this lisat you also need to put Chris Barnes on the list as well.  I feel Barnes will end up with more titales than any bowler when it's all said and done.  He is one fo the most versatile bowlers on tour.

Chris Barnes---million dollar bowler, 10 cent nugget.

Its a shame he lets his brain get in the way when he makes the show. It just always looks like he tries to do too much. Sometimes its a bad thing to be able to do anything to the ball.

I think Chris Barnes is a push.

His inability to control the levelness of his shot on TV is killing him over and over.  Bump! Bump.  then Not Bump!

Great ball action ...inconsistent levelness at line.  Save your breath....NO...I can't beat him!
