PBA goes poker -style for telecasts.
« on: August 08, 2011, 05:08:59 AM »
Has anyone read the August 2011 issue of Bowler's Journal?

The PBA telecasts will now best presented in a new way.The PBA

hired 441 Productions to produce the shows.Say goodbye to watching

bowling the way we have for over 60 plus years. It's always been

live or live on tape. Not anymore. Now think of the way the way poker

is presented on TV.It will no be mixed with the occasional golf like,

quick-cut successions of shots. Also,no on site production trucks. Now

the show will be assembled and edited after the event is over. And it

will be given a studio voiceover added. Then packaged for 90 minutes

of air time on ESPN.

Now it's going to be story telling and editorial. It's being aimed at

none bowlers to try to bring in a larger audience.

The first show is Nov.27,2011.And here is the kicker,For us hard-core fans,

three tournaments, are designated for Xtra Frame only.

What's your thoughts?

as long as the tape delays aren't delayed to long, i guess it's not the worst that could happen given the current state of the pba.

as far as shows exclusively on xtra frame, that does not excite me. i don't care for more monthly fees for tv.

The three Xtra Frame events are from Columbus,Ohio.Allen Park,MI.

and Indianapolis,Indiana.

They Will have three shows that will be live on TV,The Masters.U.S.Open

and The Tournament of Champions.

That was my thought Rico. The PBA says there is not enough avid bowlers

or enthusiastic fans to generate decent TV ratings. The new concept is 12 shows

from the WSOB.And we get left with the others shows listed above.

I think this move might be good. Instead of just hearing about a few of the exciting things that happened the week prior, everyone will get to see it. And through this, you can find out who the players are more and more, which could add to the telecast.

Thinking from the point of view of non-bowlers: Who wants to watch 3 or 4 games bowled when the scoring pace is just awful because a player made them that way, all the while Randy Pedersen is talking about how great a match was for the round of 16 or 8?

I think the "poker" telecast creates interest in those that are not dedicated to the game or sport that is being depicted by showcasing the big moments of the entire event. I know I was one of the people to give poker a try after watching the documentary styled shows.

I actually think Rob and Randy don't do that bad of a job. Yeah they are a bit silly at times, but they are not boring. I have listened to quite a few baseball games where I got so bored with the lack of excitement about what they were discussing that it drove me to hit the mute button and add my own commentary lol. Which would you rather have, commentators that don't care what comes out of their mouths and are just boring, or would you rather have people who like what they do and add excitement? I think if I wanted just plain boring, I'd go watch cricket or something.

Would it be possible to move the PBA tournaments to the summer? I know bowling is pretty much a winter sport, but it's never going to succeed on TV against Football, Basketball and to a lesser extent, Hockey.

The problem I had with the PBA shows recently were the facts they were fast tracking a lot of bowling and had more fluff then substance. Along with format changes every other event.

I loved watching Poker on ESPN til they started going to the newer format. You watch one hand, then get stuck with a whole lot of fluff on a player, and other stuff and have no idea of anything going on. One hand at this table, part of a hand some where else and lots of B.S. in between. Maybe 3-5 hand per 30minutes of air time with all the fluff and commercials.

That lead me to watch Poker after dark.  A much better telecast, smaller setting with several top players, lots of card action, and some talk with the actual players during the event when they aren't playing in a hand. Also some edited in talk with players about what was going on during a particular hand while playing. You actually get to watch poker and not hear about everyone elses life story. They actually show them playing cards.

Since they have little or no sponsorship dollars now, it will either right the ship or speed up the sinking.  If they are still going to be counter programming against the NFL, I'd say sink.

They are still going up against the NFL.When they were thinking of this concept, the NFL

season was still up in the air,and the PBA was hoping that they could draw in fans of the NFL

if the season was canceled.Bad idea.NFL never loses.

If they are going to repackage this sport - the PBA should note that women's billiards (no I didn't mean poker) is way more popular than the men's matches on TV - just saying:)

Poker - isn't that what ESPN puts on when they don't have anything else to show - poker is a sport? - WTH

Playing cards can net you more money in one tourney then bowling 20+yrs on the PBA tour.

There are SO many things that need to be said, but instead, I'll just say this:

R.I.P P.B.A.

And, the sooner, the better. It is nothing but a joke anymore, and NOTHING like the game you see at the amatuer level. Why WOULD we want to watch it, afterall, it's not even the same game we are playing.

For years, they've had their "pro edition" bowling balls, and now they've got proprietary lane conditions that you aren't even allowed to use without paying some ignorant fee to use them.

Why would the PBA continue to alienate itself from the very fan base that it needs to survive? The only answer is greed and ignorance.

I feel really bad for the guys who grew up dreaming of making a hit on the PBA tour, but that is life, and we will ALL go right on, even after the PBA is dead and buried, which I don't think is going to take very long.
