PBA Player of the Year
« on: December 31, 2005, 08:31:46 AM »
Since the second half is close to starting, who do you think is the PBA Player of the Year up to this point? There is a poll on the PBA website, and Norm Duke is leading over Mike Scroggins (see here: http://www.pba.com/showpollresult.asp ). I think Scroggins really is leading it, but because people do not like him, they vote Duke instead. But who do you honestly feel it is up to this point? Heres my top 5.
1.) Mike Scroggins
2.) Tommy Jones
3.) Norm Duke
4.) Wes Malott
5.) Patrick Allen

I agree with your top 5 list and the order.  I do not like watching Scroggins, but at the half way point I'd agree that he probably deserves to be the top contender.

I know this is personal opionion. After Mike and his "leauge bowler" comments, hes pretty low in my list of respected bowlers, hes only in the 3rd place spot cause hes got 2 titles this year with 1 being a majors. Tommy is in 2nd for his very strong start to the season but has since dropped off a bit. Norm Duke, hes just a great guy to talk with, my new all time favorite over WRW.

1. Norm Duke
2. Tommy Jones
3. Mike Scroggings
4. Wes Malott
5. Patrick Allen

I agree with your list. I really like Duke too, but I
think player of the year should be based on accomplishment
more than popularity. Based on that, Scroggins is
ahead. Who knows what the second half of the season
will bring?

If you look at the PBA.com Player of the year Poll that they have going. Duke is on top in that poll by 4% (the last time I looked). That is just because of his popularity and huge fan base. If Scroggings continues his best season just as strong as he started it, I have no doubt Scroggings will be Player of the year unfortunately. Do I want him to be "POY"?? god no, id rather see Tommy or Norm in that spot much more.

Scroggins is leading the points list.
I really, really, really, really, really hope Norm overtakes him, and stomps on the rest of the field...

Did I say I REALLY hope so???

Scroggins will have to start bowling better on TV if he wants to win PoY.  Yes, he's made more shows, but except for his Masters title, he hasn't been bowling that well on TV.  Yes, he's bowling very well until that point but those back-to-back sevens really make him look like the "league bowler", regardless of whether those were the only two he missed in two tournaments.

Remember, though, that PoY is voted on by the members, not the public, and most of the guys out bowling seriously in Regionals and the national tour can probably look at everything he's done to get to where he is, even if he did blow the last two TV shows (which is all we see).

If we don't have any three- or four-time titlists this year like last year, his one major title plus the rest of his season could be enough.

I will stay with last years finalists. Jones and Allen. I am anxious to see if some oiling changes are made as lefties have been on top alot this year and there has been mucho complaining. If they get cold shouldered (I believe they will) I would take Jones with Wes in second and then Norm. Norms the crowd favorite and is the most fun to watch as well as skilled. I like seeing new blood so TJ hope you can put the new father thing in focus. More interested in seeing who gets dropped out from the points race though. Some big names on the tail end currently.

At this point you can't tell anything at all so I wouldn't give it to anyone. Tommy Jones, Mike Scroggins, Norm Duke and Wes Mallott are all too close. But next half Patrick Allen, Mika Koivuniemi, Mike Machuga, Pete Weber or Mike Wolfe could all be hopefulls that had a good first half but not as consistant as the 4 I listed. But there is 3 majors including the most important one in my opinion, the US Open.

I believe this is Wes' 4th or 5th year on tour.  Bill O'Neill, Dino Castillo, and Andres Gomez are the only exempt rookies I believe.

Well I would have to say that not really much changed here from after the Earl Anthony Medford Open. I do have a feeling though that this weeks Dick Weber Open will make somethings happen for Player of the Year.

If Duke could win a Major and a regular tour title this season, I would say that he could be the front runner for POY.

But let's not forget Wes Malott.  If he can win a major, he can definitely make a claim for POY.

And last but not least, Tommy Jones.  If he can make it to a final of a Major and win it, that might make TJ the POY.

That is now two titles for Jason Couch for the season after this Dick Weber Open, so he is definitely in the picture. What do you all think the picture looks like now?
