PBA players ball speed slower than on TV?

A friend of mine has went to several PBA tourney's and told me that the TV makes the guys ball speed look a lot faster than it does in person.  For the guys that have went to the PBA tourney's do you find this to be true?

He told me that I would be surprised at how slow a lot of the pro's ball speeds actually are.

If you are talking about Tim Criss.....I'd agree but with Wes Mallot or Sean Rash I'd disagree.

That's funny, because I've actually seen/heard the exact opposite. From what I've noticed, the guys, in general, have much faster speeds than what you'd think. It just doesn't seem as obvious because they are bowling against each other. If you were to put them next to Joe Schmoe league bowler like you or I, they would look like they were throwing missiles. Of course, there are exceptions, but most of the guys out there throw with a great deal of speed.

I went to the ProAm in Vernon Hills this year.  I bowled with LeClair, PDW, Ciccone, Oatman and Delutz.  I didn't think any of them had particularly fast ball speeds, and I certainly didn't notice anyone really winging the ball, except sometimes at single pin spares.  It was also nice to see Oatman throwing the Pain the whole night.

Scott, my buddy was just talking in general.  He said when your watching the TV finals he said there ball speed looks a lot faster than it does when your there.  Kind of like the optical illusion you see while watching football.  Football fields look a lot bigger on TV than they do in person.

I completely disagree!!! In fact when bowled one of the pro-ams with Tim Criss I was surprised that his ball speed wasnt as slow as it appears. There are alot of house bowlers that throw it alot slower then Criss, just comparable to the pba his normal ball speed is slower then most. Also remember that their ball speed all depends on what pattern they are playing on, and what matches up best with the particular lane surface. Just my opinion, but this is what I saw.

Keep in mind these guys can adjust their speed better than the rest of us - from really slow to really fast...

I know they can adjust ball speeds.  That's not what my bud was talking about.  He stated that the TV makes there ball speed look faster than what it really is.

I have wondered this also. When I have seen myself on tv I thought my ball speed looks slower than in person.

I have been to a couple of PBA TV shows and I would agree that it seems in person that the pros throw a little slower than it seems on TV.  

I have seen both PDW and Mika in person.  PDW's ball speed doesnt seem that fast in person.  He goes fairly slow but has great extension and is very fluid.
Most of the pros are so smooth and effortless in their releases that is seems they are not really throwing so fast.

I agree with all those above who said pros are "FASTER" than TV makes them look.

Even Tim Criss is surprisingly...not super slow!  Just slow compared to other pros.  I believe most are 16 to 16.5 + at the pin deck.  I've just edited this in agreement with PRecise Matt below.  16 to 16.5 is the slower side of the scale!

I've heard the PBA bowlers ball speed averages about 18-19 mph...

The backends on TV a SUPER FRESH and the ball is gunna snap like an SOB so the pros tend to throw it hard.  Plus, when you bowl long blocks and have to bowl 10-12 games the heads get cooked and that also causes you to throw it a lot harder.

I've bowled in a few local tournys were they layout PBA/Regional patterns and my ball speed jumps from 16-17 to 18-19 just because I know I have to get the ball down the lane further.

when abc-tv was showing the pba tour they tracked average ball speed on tour several times. the last time this took place the average ball speed on tour was a hair over 19mph.

the ball speed looks slower because the camera follows the ball down the lane. It makes it hard to judge beause your eyes have no real reference point.
