PBA players ball speed slower than on TV?
« on: December 28, 2006, 01:37:52 AM »
A friend of mine has went to several PBA tourney's and told me that the TV makes the guys ball speed look a lot faster than it does in person.  For the guys that have went to the PBA tourney's do you find this to be true?

He told me that I would be surprised at how slow a lot of the pro's ball speeds actually are.

I have wondered this also. When I have seen myself on tv I thought my ball speed looks slower than in person.

i remember watching an episode on espn classic where PDW was bowling ummm, the name isn't coming to mind, but it showed the speed that he was bowling his strike ball and it was 20 mph, one thing we need to keep in mind is that they adjust their speeds so often that its hard to say if they are throwing slower or faster than an average bowler, on the cheetah sure they throw it fast, on the shark, with the exception of a few power players they throw it slower. but what those speeds are is hard to say. 17mph i'd say is the average maybe faster

when abc-tv was showing the pba tour they tracked average ball speed on tour several times. the last time this took place the average ball speed on tour was a hair over 19mph.

Greg, just for reference, were those numbers measured off the hand, or at the deck?  Not unreasonable either way, just curious to know.

As many know who have attended Kegel(where ball speed is measured at several different points).

It is not unusual for ball speed at the pin deck to be between 3 to 4 mph SLOWER than speed is at the 15 foot mark.

Speeds of 18 off the hand often end up near 15 at the pin deck.

Also the amount of friction encountered often adjusts ball speeds.
On extremely long slippery oil a two mph slow down between the 15 foot mark and the pin deck is doing well(You've found some friction somewhere).

Relationships then of 20 mph off of the hand and 17 mph at the pin deck on normal conditions are often a reasonable relationship then and so on.
