Remember in the old days when they use to show the prize fund breakdowns for the top 5 and then show the rest of the top 24 with the associated prize money on the bottom of the screen ?
Guess even they are embarrassed to show how much 1st place in worth today. With $8000 on top and $2000 for 5th is not really a good payday for bowling your azz off.
Why do the young guys even want to join the PBA today, especially those that just graduate from college ?

I chatted with Matt McNeil about this very topic while in Reno a couple of weekends ago. He feels he could compete with the top guys on tour, but the money isn't there for him to make a living at it.

a couple of the young guys down here have a day job at like a proshop or distributor and bowl all the regionals then when a PBA swing comes around the employer lets them take off for a week or two. that seems to me the best way to do it now a days......then the superstars have their ball contract and travel all over the world for more money and host coaching clinics and such

Pretty pathetic. I finished 6th in the Masters during the 90's and made more than the winner of these things is getting.

Until the entire industry from manufacturers, to lanes, to organizations and individual bowlers start trying to rebuild the sport from the ground up its not going to get any better any time soon.
I mean hell you got Norm Duke in an interview saying he doesn't really enjoy it anymore, he just does it for the competition. Don't get me wrong, after this many years its understandable, but its not exactly something you want to hear one of the biggest names in the sport saying.
Hey sponsors come give us more money. We don't actually think bowling is that fun, and hardly anyone watches it anymore, but its a great investment we promise :o

I find it interesting that the PBA was paying $8000 for winning the animal tournaments in Milwaukee, but the upcoming regional in Tinley Park, IL is guaranteeing $15,000 to the winner. What other sport in the world has larger pay checks in the minor leagues than at the highest competitive level. This type of situation makes you believe that the people in charge of attaining sponsors for the "tour" are inept at best. There is sponsorship money to be gotten, but they have trouble getting much of it.

I wonder how much money tom clark and the other top guys are making

I have no idea what the top guys are making, but when you look at revenue sources, there clearly isn't anything out there to really enhance prize funds unless tv sponsors start lining up
