I just received an e-mail from CBS Sports that the Lucas Oil Wolf Open will be televised tonight at 7 PM on their network. In my area (Bergen County, NJ), Cablevision carries CBS Sports on Channel 143.
The finalists are: Pete Weber, Bill O'Neill, Chris Loschetter, Norm Duke, and a fellow named Tackett.
-
EJ Tackett is an up and comer to watch. He's done well in the PBA Regionals so far, including earning his first title recently. I think he was also on Junior Team USA. EJ is a regional staffer for Motiv.
-
IDK how EJ will do tonight. But that kid can play. I watched him bowl on the BAdger and the Bear and he can compete on any condition.
BTW, good to have DAve Ryan back calling the shots.
-
anybody know what ball duke was throwing? is it the rumble?
-
Critical theory is what duke was throwing
-
thanks
-
No problem
-
Waiting one more night to air on wednesday when the nba finals aren't on would have been better.
-
Nice tournament; good to see Loschetter get his tour first title. Tackett looked pretty good especially since this was his 1st television appearance.
-
St. Croix... major BallReveiws faux pas to mention the winner of a televised match so soon after it's completed. Give people a chance to watch it at a online or at a later air time...

Exactly, he just ruined that for me. Thanks St Croix!

Or at least put "Spoiler Alert" on there...

I was impressed with EJ tacket golf ability, based on handicap and low scores listed!
Is he a Wichita Stater also?

What ball did Loschetter use? Just wondering if he threw Brunswick or not.

IQ Tour. He wore a Storm jersey, but he did have a SmackDown in his arsenal.
-
Good for Chris. Meet him at a Pro-Am one year and he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Happy to see him get his first title. Hope it doesnt take that long to get his second.
-
Was a fun event to watch, although was surprised at some of the ball choices ( thought we would of seen much less aggressive balls being thrown similar to O'Neil and the Vibe).
Pete with a gutter ball and Norm just looked baffled, don't see that often.
If your Brunswick you gotta be smacking yourself. One of the longest streaks on the Tour without a win, goes Independent, throws Storm and wins his first title. Granted it probably has more to do with him finally managing his nerves better, but its still gotta sting a bit.

No doubt about the sting to Brunswick. After all, Loschetter was a loyal staffer to them for most of the time he's been on tour.
This would not be the first time that the pros have used strong stuff on short patterns for the show. I remember back in 2010 when Eugene McCune won his 2nd title on Cheetah, that 4 of the 5 pros used the strongest balls possible at that time. This is what everyone used on that show:
Lonnie Waliczek: Brunswick Evil Siege
Michael Haugen Jr.: 900 Global Bank
Dick Allen: Ebonite Mission and Ebonite Vital Energy
Eugene McCune: Hammer Taboo
Norm Duke: Storm Tropical Heat
Randy Pedersen explained the reasoning of strong equipment for the show. It was because the stronger stuff would lose energy quicker and be more controllable in the back part of the lane.
I have tried this before on some shorter patterns. Sometimes, it will work. For example, I've thrown a Storm Anarchy, Roto Grip Infinite Theory, and an Ebonite Vital Energy before on higher friction HPL and Anvilane. For me, I can stay firm and bump further left while keeping the ball reaction I want. Most times, I will use my Storm Frantic. It's all dependent on the lane surface and how the individual lanes are playing at that time.
-
Sure hope someone can put these matched up so that we can view them! Thanks!

I figured that's what the idea was, but I just thought it would be neat to see the players throwing something other than the same high volume balls that they always seem to throw. It why I was excited to O'Neil bust the Vibe out, and thought it would of been awesome to see someone break out one of the Storm Breeze lines or something.
Obviously the goal is to win, but I'm sure the ball manufacturers would have loved to see some of those lower market price balls thrown as well just to up their visibility. Granted I know some of them were thrown this week while they were trying to figure things out, just kind of one of those things I would of liked to have seen.

I didn't read all the posts but I know that Bill O'neill started with an Arson Low Flare.
I did not see the drilling! He switched to a blue Taboo. Pete used an IQ tour solid and had a tropical heat hybrid he might have used.
I think Loschetter used an IQ tour solid also. All of these balls have diffs of low medium to low but for sure under .040.
Surprisingly EJ Tacket used a Primal Rage and made it look very good.

Here is a playlist for the tournament.

It was nice to see Chris win for the first time. He always kind of annoyed me for some reason, but he changed that when I watched last night. His nerves seemed in check and it sure seemed to help.
I actually found myself rooting for him towards the end - even though I was rooting for the Real Deal the whole way through.

MrNick .. Thanks you very much for putting up the video .. I'm one of those Seniors that loves bowling but can't afford the extra TV cost .. really appreciate it ..
-
All of you who are whining about the poster who congratulated Loschetter on winning need to get over it already.
Number one, you're on a site where bowling is talked about 24/7/365, so the chance that the most recent show will be talked about is pretty high.
Second, you click on a thread titled "PBA TOURNAMENT TONIGHT ON CBS SPORTS". What did you think people were going to talk about, golf? Use some common sense.
Lastly, nowhere in the thread title was the winner named, it only happened in a post talking ABOUT THE SHOW. So, if you don't want to know who won, don't click on a thread where people are talking about the previous night's show, PERIOD. Like I said, find something useful to complain about, or carry on.
-
, but golf was talked about!!
I agree though. I just watched the recording last night and purposely stayed away from this thread all yesterday. Wasn't a big deal.
-
One more time .. Thanks .. loved the matches!
-
No problem. Not my work though. Subscribe to that Youtube channel, and you will get just about every tournament.
-
I like the job CBS Sports has done so far with their televised coverage. Allotting 2 hours instead of 1.5 hours makes a big difference, as they actually have enough time to talk to players between matches and after the tournament. I hope they do more CBS Sports coverage for future events past this summer. Digging the prime time slot during the week, too.

Actually Bill switched to the Cobalt Vibe. Although he did throw the original Taboo once in the 10th frame against Norm Duke.

Thanks for posting the link. I get NBCSN on ATT U-verse, not CBSSN

PBA Bear Open, holy crap is that a crappy oil pattern.
Link for those needing it.

ARMOURBOY .. Thanks a million for getting the link up .. loved the matches!

Hard condition.... Great matches!

Finally got caught upnon these shows. These three new patterns have been my three favorite shows of the year. Talent level is at an all time high on tour right now and its good to see some old friends finally break through. Couldn't be happier for Loschetter. You will see ALOT of Jake Peters, Josh Blanchard, Maclelland, and EJ Tackett for years to come.
-
It's been great to see some new faces this summer on the shows. I'm also glad to see Dan MacLelland finally win some matches on tv. It's only a matter of time before he gets his first title.
-
Its not every day that you see an oil pattern mess with a guy like Chris Barnes, was fun as hell to watch. I'm just not that sure I would want to bowl on it.
-
I couldn't be happier for Losch. He absolutely deserved a win, and it is good to see that he finally did it.
But that also starts a bit of a trend for me. For years, we've all had our favourites on the tour, and more times than not, they've been the popular stars: Duke, Williams, Weber, Anthony, Roth, Bohn, Barnes, Belmo, etc..
But personally, over the past 20 or so years, I've been rooting more for the underdogs, or the ones that truly persevere. Jurek leapfrogged a bunch of people on my favourites list, followed by Losch, Bryon Smith, etc. The guys that have had that drought from when they started to when they won, or that mammoth winless streak between titles, but never give up. Just them and their perseverance makes you like them more.
The greats are always the greats.. but ones that struggle and persevere, they are where the stories and the life lessons come from.

Anybody getting sick of Randy Pederson? To me, he sounds more arrogant every week. He makes fun of people's cloths and music, but it's not in a very friendly way.
He also doesn't say the word and - he say 'n, 'n he says it a lot.
-
I view the shows through links provided by BR members. I find nothing wrong with Randy and I love the shows .. going back to the old format was a great decision! I was hoping the new setup would increase the winners prize fund but it looks like that's NOT happening!
-
Maybe I just let him get to me this broadcast.
The prize fund is borderline embarrassing.

What do you expect with a down economy? Not every sport is rolling in the money like Basketball, Baseball, or Football. And when you have bowling centers catering more to the kids that only want to come in on a Friday night and Cosmic bowl, the sport's popularity is going to fade. Add on to the fact that those same kids can't seem to get off their arses and away from Facebook for 5 seconds let alone the time to bowl 3 games, and it all trickles up. Less popularity = less sponsorship = less prize fund.
This problem started a long time ago, and helped contribute to the downfall of the PWBA, and still to this day they have not found a solution for it.

I understand why it's bad, but it's just saddening.
-
Until bowling centers in general start doing something to build the sport they are going to remain sad. Poor management is killing the sport more than any single thing.
Randy Pedersen is annoying as hell. Its funny for a week or so, but his lame ass attempt s at being funny wear on you quick.

Bowling's model for success never was there at a professional level. Golf was a rich mans pastime that morphed into an activity for the middle class, bringing with it interest from CEO's of large companies with big advertising budgets for tv. In the 60's and 70's more people watched bowling on tv than golf or NBA basketball, but the big companies weren't interested in targeting the bowling crowd with their ad money
Bowling was a blue collar activity that never had the respect of the so called upper class during the period when it could have benefited from more tv sponsorship.

Very true. But to add onto that, look at the roots of where bowling started: more industrialized cities and states, like Milwaukee, places in New Jersey, New York, etc.
Golf? required wide open spaces and the money to manicure and maintain it. That definitely geared itself towards the upper class and more white collar positions.
But until both management raises its bar on taking care of the sport, as well as the media giving it more attention (which it won't until someone busts through to the masses, and to be honest, Belmo and Osku are paling in comparison to Woods or LeBron), we're going to continue to be in this slump.
Perhaps we need to take a page out of Japan's playbook, as popularity there has skyrocketed.

Isn't it ironic that bowling gets less respect here than almost any other country in the world where it is played.
It is so sad that the PBA couldn't have picked up about 5 more sponsors like Firestone back in the 70's. As it turns out the game got in a vicious cycle where casual fans lost interest as prize funds lagged, and sponsors ran away as viewership declined.
