the PRO's arsenals and layouts?
« on: January 27, 2007, 07:51:05 AM »
which pro do you think uses the smallest arsenal?  Which pro do you think uses the least amount of layouts?

I'm inclined to think that WRW uses the least amount of equipment and the least amount of layouts.

I also have read many times that a lot of the pro's only use 2 different layouts on all their equipment.

I think its a safe bet that the ones that have less balls have a lesser contract or none at all with a ball company. if you get them for free, and actually get paid to make the balls look good, I would think you would make sure you have what ever you could possibly need.

I'd believe that WRW uses very few layouts.  Most of his equipment looks pretty close to stacked leverage.  He's said several times that he uses surface changes to get different reactions and that cores, layouts, and numbers are not what he's interested in.

Jeff Carter's arsenal on the his website has very few layouts, and almost all of it looked like one of two layouts.

kind of ironic, isn't it ? the greatest bowler in history uses very few drilling patterns and has a small arsenal. he relies more on skill----speed control, accuracy, angle, loft, axis rotation, etc. it's the bowler not the ball.

While all that is true, he'd be the first to tell you that he still needs to match the ball with the lane conditions in order to be successful at his level.

yep exactly, still need to find the right ball, the signifigance of a layout is really not that much.

true, he'll be the first to tell you that the surface of the ball has to compliment the oil pattern. but rather than changing balls constantly or look for better carry with a different layout he'll make minor adjustments such as angle, loft, speed, etc. it's his versatility as a bowler that makes him great.

That's why he's the exception that proves the rule of having multiple drillings along with the coverstock preps.  He's the one person that can do all those things with minimal drillings and do them better than anyone else.  As Chris Brnes said last week, he can just out repeat everyone.

Duke only uses balls with pin between 3 3/8", and 6" (or was it 6 3/4?).
