PBA World Series of Bowling?
« on: May 02, 2009, 03:36:14 AM »
Maybe I'm missing the discussion, but I can't find it anywhere.

http://www.pba.com/worldseries/

So they are cramming a whole bunch of bowling into August, and then delaying all the airings to spread them through January?

Sounds like we now have a PBA season that runs from August-August and then January-March.

Sucks if you follow everything on PBA.com-- might not be reason to watch a telecast; $5 says it will hurt ratings.  And we all know the PBA needs bruised ratings.

I also have a funny feeling this $2 million number they are throwing around actually represents a prize fund DECREASE as compared to seven stand-alone events (and whatever else they are having during this "world series."  The $2 million is a nice way to throw it in though and make people think that's it's a great idea!

Just some clarification, I assume this is meant to keep travel and production costs down-- I don't know how bad they have been.

Also, Talk Tenpin is quoted as saying the total prize payout will be $192,000 per tournament with $25,000 to the winner.

I wonder what's the number of pros on board with this.  I'd assume it's probably quite a few seeing as they save travel money and have time for other tournaments, but it still creates a glaring hole in the schedule from September to January.

... oh and sorry this is old news-- looks like the presser came out a month ago.  Any mods can feel free to merge this if there's some mega-thread I don't see.

This isn't separate from the regular tour season? I thought it was.

The PBA World Series of Bowling begins August 2, 2009 at longtime PBA host center Taylor Lanes in Taylor, Mich. The World Series of bowling then moves to Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich. from August 7 - September 7, 2009. All seven ESPN telecast finals will be held at Thunderbowl Lanes and taped at the conclusion of the World Series of Bowling. These seven shows will then air out over what has traditionally been the first half of the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season from mid-October to early December 2009 Sundays are for bowling on ESPN.

Here's an article from Jeff Richgels discussing it too:  http://77square.com/sweat/blog/frame11/entry_440933

I think this is overall bad for the PBA.

1) It is in Detroit and an economically depressed area. How much gate will they get the last 3 or 4 weeks when holding tournaments, or even the taped TV shows.

2) The World Championship show will not be played out till months after the field for the show has been set.

3) The tour needs to go to new cities and expose itself to new fans if it is to grow. Detroit is already a bowling hot bed.

4) Seems like pro-am entries would be way down. Sitting in one city you have a pretty limited pool of bowlers willing to do this.

5) Tape delayed means most fans will hear the results before the shows air.

6) A common lane surface for most of the tournaments. Certain styles may dominate the tournaments because of this.

So, they bowl from Aug 1 - Sept 1, narrowing it down to the top 4 bowlers.

That gets taped and edited to play in the mid-Oct to early Dec time slots.

Dec 13, they have a live finals show between the top 4.

From January to April they go back to the "traditional" style of weekly tour stops.

Sounds like it will cut down on travel expenses and may give the bowlers more time to spend with their families.  Of course, the bowlers will still have to find a place to stay for the month they are bowling in Detroit.

Maybe they go in and buy a couple of the sub-$10k houses!

You'd think with it all being tape delayed and in the same building, they will do some background stories on qualifying and also have some video from qualifying.  Seems to me that this would be a good opportunity to show how the players made it to the show.
