PDW withdraws from US Open
« on: February 14, 2005, 04:46:13 AM »
According to reports PDW has dropped out of this weeks
US Open due to his dad's death. The great Dick Weber
will be deeply missed.

Although I understand his reason for dropping out, I figured he'd shoot it and dedicate it to his father.  It's a sad day indeed for bowling and all sports really.  Dick was a true ambassador.  He will be missed.

I can understand withdrawing to be with his family. I'm sure most of us here had to take time out to deal with any tragedy. I'm sure Pete can pull through and return the following week

I don't think he had any choice but to drop out. It's really a shame.

Even though everything we say is mere speculation, I couldn't see Pete bowling.  From the stories that I've heard, his father was such a hugely important figure in Pete's life that he wouldn't be able to concentrate.  And knowing what I know of Dick (which is all stories) if Pete were to dedicate a tournament in his honor, he would want Pete to be at the top of his game.

Agreed 100% on that. The best thing to do is take a week or two off and regain composure and come back strong.

I would think it's going to be real tough this week for the guys to bowl. I was talking to Johnny Petraglia yesterday at the Pro AM and he told me and my buddies what a great guy Dick Weber was. I guess The Show Must Go On but I'm sure it's going to weigh heavily on the minds of alot of bowlers this week.

I had the pleasure of being very close with Dick. I found out first thing this morning and i have been in tears since. I spoke with Pete and Tracy before they left for the airport and understandably neither is doing very well. This is a very sad day for the entire sport of bowling, but it is going to be extremely difficult for the Midwest Region. Things will never be the same without Dick. My condolences go out to Juanita, Pete & Tracy, Rich and John

Also lets try to refrain from the "Pete is a disgrace to his father" comments on this thread. You are entitled to you opinion but this is hardly the place to voice it.

Class, Class and Class.

Just a joy to watch speak.

And while Pete may not have all the class of his father(it's tough to be as good as great father's (I know)he was loved dearly by his father and it was obvious the feeling went both ways.

As to Jeff Carter I hope I get to meet him some day!  An incredible record holder, deep thinker, budding tourist and an admirer of class and decorum.
I hope he achieves all the success he truly deserves!

Thanks Jeff for your comments here and on this site in general!

Lefty, thank you very much for your comments. It is people like you that make this the sport the greatest in the world.

As far as Pete goes i would like to make a few comments. Now i am very biased because of my relationship with Pete, but i also know that Pete is a tremendous person. Most people dont get to see Pete the way some of us do. The Pete you get to see is on TV, during a pro-am or while he is bowling in competition. Pete is very focused and competitive. Most of the time that i have seen Pete be "non-fan friendly", it is because it is provoked. I cant believe some of the things people say to him. Sometimes i think people do this just to piss him off so they can talk about how big of a jerk he is. Pete is also living in the shadow of a legend. I dont know how many of you are the child of one of the greatest bowlers ( insert any occupation ) in the world, but to live with that can be unbearable. I know first hand how it is to be wrong about somebody. When i joined the PBA i had opinions on 2 guys in particular, Steve Jaros & Dave Traber. My opinions werent favorable based on what i had seen on TV and just the short time i had been around them. In my first year i ended up going to dinner with Dave at a regional and we quickly became good friends and out friendship has grown since. As for Steve, he is one of my closest friends now. We have traveled together, roomed together and our families have vactationed together. I guess what im trying to say is dont be so quick to judge the players out here based off of what you see on TV or on a chance meeting. I was very wrong about Dave & Steve and i gained 2 very good friends when i realized that.

I apologize about my ramblings but i just hate to see Pete continually get bashed, especially today. He really deserves much more. Thanks for your time

Oh a little more.

I absolutely LOVE to watch Pete Weber bowl.

Always have always will.  I can't imagine a season without him on the show!

From shots of his beautiful wife, to his shades, his excitement and his game I could easily stand about 1/2 of the weeks with him on the show!

REgards,

I hope all the Weber family stay together, remember Mr. Weber and the good things he brought them and to the sport they and we love.  And my heart goes out to PDW, a man who has gone through a number of personal trials over the years.  May he remember his Dad with a smile.

I would just like to say it's a very sad day for Bowling and bowlers all over the world.  I just read the PBA site and saw the news about the passing of Mr Weber.

I met Mr Weber a few times through the PBA Midwest region and he was such a nice person, and not to shabby with the bowling ball either.  One of the all time greats!!!  Mr Weber's passing has left a huge void in the bowling world.

I also have had the chance to bowl a tournament with Pete Weber and I have to agree with Mr Carter, give Pete a break.  It has to be kind of hard when every where you go you have a target on your back.  When I bowled with Pete he was very nice and actually very funny.

My condolences go out to Pete, John and all the Weber family members
