Pete Weber...unadvised ball change?
« on: January 08, 2007, 03:42:04 AM »
Hey all,

I had the chance to watch the show in Reno this weekend.  When Weber came out and started practicing, he was holding a Storm Agent.  Playing outside of the 10 board, he was striking pretty well and it even got the crowd cheering.  He even took out a T-Road and was striking well from the outside.  He used the Agent for the majority of the practice though.

During the first match, he was practicing on the other side of the house, still with an Agent, striking well (I could see since I was in the grand seating from up top) then he pulled out the Special Agent and started playing from the inside.  He was still doing okay from the inside from what I saw, but he seriously had people thinking he was going to win this show with the Agent from the outside.

Come his match, he uses the Special Agent.  He seemed very uncomfortable and unconfident throughout the whole match while during practice he looked like he was on top of the world.

Unadvised ball change?  What would cause him to switch after having such a great look from the outside in practice?

I'd venture he made that change in practice after seeing WRW had won or had carry issues out there.  all bowlers like to have a line all to themselves, I am sure he thought the better angle would result in better carry

PDW is usually able to creat his own lines to the pocket, his unique roll lets him move inside and create lines that 95 percent of the pros cannot do. He made an educated guess committed to it and it did not work out well this time around last time he did this he won. So he is 50/50 this year for creating his own shot at titles, he played his A game and maybe knows that bowling WRW at his A game is not a good move.

WRW was having trouble throughout the entire practice.  He really didn't find his shot until the end of the first match.  Really, everyone practiced from the outside.  For lefties, Couch was having trouble while PA looked great, for righties, WRW was having trouble while Weber was having a strike fest.  I dunno, I'm not gonna argue with the decision of a legend...maybe I was just hoping too much for a PDW vs WRW match.

didn't seem to have his feet under him for part of the match.

I think many of us can relate.

I really think his reaction looked ok but I agree that ball probaly wouldn't have been the best one to use. His fill in shot with the (T Road Pearl?) looked better. Also, his first two shots had some bad luck with carry. I'm stunned he missed that 7 pin though for he's such a terrific spare shooter.

I was lucky enough to work with Lenny Nicholson in 1993 at the PBA Wyoming Valley Senior Open in Wilkes-Barre. I was the lane man at that center at the time. This was the tournament that Ron Winger won and had 300 on TV. I was in the locker room 30 minutes befor the show and the phone calls started coming in. Winger used a Power Torq that day. I know that several of the pros were offered a nice chunk of cash for using a certain ball on TV. If my memory is correct. Jimmy Certain was the only person to use a ball on the show that he used during the week. Weber may have had a nice cash incentive offer to throw the Special Agent as it is one of their newer balls and he did win this year with it already. I wouldn't doubt that was the case. He probably guaranteed himself 1st or 2nd place money just by using that ball....  Just my opinion    Beans    PS   Weber and Barnes are without a doubt my favorite palyers on tour.

So, how much was it worth?  PA already found out that one mfg. didn't work for him.  Beans are you saying that a player can make enough $$$$ to NOT win a tourney and just use a specific ball?  If, that is so that's sucks and another notch why the PBA is doomed.

I'd like to hear from BrunsRich and some other tour guys like otherguy and how much is it worth to the manufacturer for the player in the show to bowl with a ball that the manufacturer wants to showcase.  Guys????

Also, I seem to remember Steve Jaros using an original solid black Vendetta that definitely is NOT a showcase ball on a Shark pattern this year.....best look he had.  PDW used a Special Agent to win that tourney I think???

Anyone know if he was inside or outside during match play? How about when he shot 300 in match play? As for the match, if Pete's first ball(left a 7) strikes, I bet he doesn't rush the second shot and leave a 4-9, he still may not have won but the match would have been really interesting.
