Plastic Ball Championships

Well I get a chance to go watch the tour this year in CO, and it ends up being the Plastic Ball Championships. I hope its a good one or im gunna be pissed

I know who won't win: Ryan Shaffer LOL with his ultra-nasty tilt and rotation.  That ball ain't going nowhere but straight LOL!!!

It's all about entry angle for them. And once they find the optimum, they will strike just as much as anyone else.

Says who?  You DON'T need that much entry angle to throw strikes.  I've got less hand than Duke or WRW and even I can point my plastic ball at the head pin and carry the 10 pin just fine.  People did it for years and years with rubber and polyester balls before urethane and reactive resin equipment was available.  (And may I remind you that WRW was throwing plastic on the short oil pattern with Team USA several weeks ago and carrying just fine)

I think that all the pro tournaments should use plastic balls.  Technology has made bowling a joke.  IMO, players should focus more on skill than crying about how their ball isn't reacting the way they want.

To me, reactive resin, urethane = aluminum bats that college players use
Plastic balls = wooden bats that pro baseball players use

If they are pros, they should have the difficulty of using plastic.  Instead the pros get the most expensive and self-working balls on the planet.  It doesn't make sense.

Also with plastic, you can see who really is the most accurate and best bowler.  Reactive balls give you a larger range of error.  Plastic balls give nearly none.  

No weight block, just straight plastic is what the PBA should be about.

Yeah, it carried for years on less oil. If they put out cheetah with it's modern day volume and the carry down it creates, they will not carry.


We'll all see what happens, but I still say the power players are going win this.

That is yet to be matched this decade, so try to find whatever the hell you were throwing ten years ago and you might set some personal bests.
Just for the record, Norm Duke actually broke that mark during the '06-'07 season.  Per his PBA.com bio, "set the PBA’s single-season average record in 2006-07 (228.47)"  And WRW averaged 228.34 last year as well.  However, those averages are less than half a pin higher than Parker Bohn's old record.  That's it.  Not exactly a huge jump.  The previous poster's point still stands:  the bowler definately matters more than the ball being thrown!

And how do you know it won't carry?  I'll even give you an example.  I had to throw my plastic ball on the Cheetah pattern for a couple frames this summer while I was getting some gummed-up tape out of my thumbhole on my regular ball.  (Bear in mind, this is me, a bowler of less than 250rpm rev rate we're talking about!)  I managed to throw a double then leave a stone 8 with it.  (I should have stuck with the plastic ball I guess -- that was the best I bowled all day!)

Getting to the pocket is just as important as carry, if not more so.  The power players are generally less accurate than the Duke/WRW strokers, and without the recovery room that you get from a high friction coverstock, accuracy is key.

I'm looking forward to this event this season.  I throw plastic from time to time on the house shot to work on things.  I shot a 197 last night the first game and switched to my plastic ball(clear wolf)the second game.  The second game I shot a 207.  Plastic balls will carry, you just have to roll them.

As for the tournament, shot makers will when this deal.  I'm still going with Norm or WRW, perhaps even Barnes.

Don't kid yourself, the pros are going to hit the pocket, and with less friction they aren't going to be nearly as penalized for bad shots(designer splits aren't going to be a problem), and EVERY PRO can get to the pocket. Over the long haul their extra power is going to kick out the ten pins more than the weaker hands. The strokers aren't going to have resin to help them carry.

Anybody thinking the oldtimers won't be in the running (WR, PB III, etc...) are only fooling themselves.  These guys learned the game in the rubber ball era, they will be just fine.  This tourny will put a premium on spares, and guys like WR who have the top spare games will likely win out.
