Plastic Ball Tournament Predictions
« on: July 31, 2008, 02:35:40 AM »
Now that the PBA plastic ball tournament is a virtual lock to happen...

Which non-exempt pros would you want to put money on to do well?  Which exempt pros do you think have a shot? And, for a final (fun) question... which pros do you think have little to no chance?

I'll start:

Non-exempt:

1) Jim Pratt
2) Mike Houtz
3) One of the senior guys -- like a Tom Baker, David Ozio, etc.

Exempt (in order):

1) Norm Duke
2) Mike Machuga
3) PDW (though the Cheetah aspect of the event might hurt his chances)
4) WRW (though I personally think his game has benefitted from reactive stuff tremendously)
5) Danny Wiseman
6) SURPRISE: Mike Fagan (for some reason, I can see it happening)

Exempt (who will not do well, also in order):

1) Sean Rash (He's got the hand to carry a ton, but this is a guy whose area on the lanes is largely the result of modern equipment)
2) Ritchie Allen
3) SURPRISE/SHOCK: Chris Barnes or Tommy Jones (just because you know there is going to be a shocking finish for somebody)

Thoughts? Let's make a few predictions...

Baker may have been using plastic when he won in the early eighties. WRWJR won his first in 86 with urethane, seen it on Espn classic.

Yes, but I am 99% sure he won in the late 80s with a Maxim.

del ballard.  soft speed, sufficient turn, lots of experience in both his adjustments and with plastic equipment.

This is easy to me. Chris Barnes has the best chance of winning this tournament. He can throw a soft, hard and direct roll with pinpoint accuracy.

Other guys I somewhat like to win this:

David Traber
Steve Jaros
Chris Warren
Walter Ray Williams
Ritchie Allen

The first guy that I thought of when I read about this tournament was Chris Barnes.  I would be shocked if he didn't make the show, and he should win once he's there.

according to pba.com the plastic balls are supplied for the tournament by ebonite and the players will not be allowed to alter the surface of the ball. walter ray williams, jr., did win a pba national title in 1993 using a plastic ball.

Tell me the pattern & the volume of oil to be used! Then I'll be able to pick a couple. Todays conditions are VASTLY different than during the plastic era, so if similar patterns, then accuracy & some hand will go far. If the oil volume is still pretty high, then the advantage goes to the power players.

If he was still on the tour I would say Monacelli, but since he isnt I'm gonna go with Barnes

I'm not sure I would count Ritchie out...back before many outside of the SW region knew his name, I seem to recall that he did relatively well at, I beleive, the US Open using plastic in the qualifying rounds.  I also seem to recall he was one of the ones who touted the 'practice with plastic' concept...

The real question will be to see how many new offerings come out with substantial weight blocks...

Robert Smith has a 834 with a Blue Dot, now they are going to put something softer in his hand...LOOK OUT!

Please don't think the RPM guys cannot be play straight because the "new PBA" forces them to play straight on a regular basis with those busted animal patterns they offend us by calling that bowling.

What's wrong with putting an emphasis on accuracy?  You can hook the whole lane if you want on the animal patterns, but you have to hit your target, and that's hard to do when hooking it.  Accuracy is king, and should be!  What's the point of bowling if you don't have to be accurate???
