Poor Wes Malott
« on: July 03, 2011, 05:32:21 AM »
On Team Shootout, his strike ball looks so much more authoritative with the increased ball speed and rev rate (he must be up to 475-500 rpms by now), but how is it he is still missing 10 pins?
Or at least a very important 10 pin. All he needed was a mark in the 10th frame to win his team 5 points - he seemed to rush it and missed that 10 pin by a mile. Did he stick at the foul line? I didn't see that but he always has trouble sliding for a 10 pin.

They say that Wes, like Allen Iverson, isn't big on practice..could explain some of it.

I must have missed that on T.V. Malott just haven't had the best of luck lately and it seems like he doesn't have quite the confidence that he had a few seasons back. Maybe during this season he'll make a nice comeback.

The few times I have seen him on the Shootout (I've watched them all so far, except today's. Will watch it after dinner.) he seemed very cheerful and full of confidence. I'd even go so far as to say he's bowled really well. As I mentioned above, his ball speed and rev rate seem to have increased.

Maybe if he had more experience using plastic equipment, like bowling in the Mark Roth plastic ball tournament, he'd be used to throwing them a bit more.

Good thing he didn't bowl in that. It might have thrown off his game like he said it would.

He needs to go back to Etonics.. Seems like all his sliding and sticking problems came about when he went to Dexter..

I don't think so. He throws the Natural at spares so hard, it goes almost perfectly straight anyway.
I think the problem may be the shoes or his timing.

While I feel bad for Malott, who just seems like a really nice guy, every once in a while under pressure you're just gonna miss the occasional 10 pin.  Just ask Mika...

But, Lane, over the past 2 years or so, he's missed a lot on TV, for a pro, and especially for a recent Player of the Year.

I wonder whether or not he misses many during the week before the TV show. I really don't know, and won't make excuses for him either.  I'm sure when he gets tired of the misses he'll do whatever is necessary to fix the issue.

Lack of practice or concentration. May be both but I tend to think practice.

Those that can do. Those that can't complain. Pimpin ain't easy, but it's mandatory.

They were bowling in a "Bowling Lounge."  Well maintained approaches aren't as important as over priced food and cocktails.  I heard a few guys muttering under their breath about sticking.  If you watch the shows again, you'll see quite a few players coming to an abrupt stop on spares and strikes.  Voss had to be a good foot behind the foul line which I don't think is his norm.

Before anyone says, change slide soles.... It's hard to change soles depending on what part of the lane you're sliding on.  Not practical.

Summer time and synthetic approaches = sticky situation...

Something happened to Wes between that King of the Hill series (where he threw 2 - 300 games on TV) and the start of the 2009-10 season.  He's said time and time again that he has struggled with timing issues.  I would think a PBA pro would work on that and "fix" it.  But if it's true that he doesn't practice, then that's his problem.  I like watching Wes bowl, his power just seems so effortless...

If you watched his release closely, the ball was off his hand at the foul line.  He appeared to dropped the heck out of it.  In alot of the spares he misses on TV, the thumb seems to come out of the ball way too early, causing zero projection through the heads and seems to always miss the spares to the left side.  I think if it was his feet, it would screw him up on every shot; not just the 10 pins.  Part of that could be a timing issue.  I dont think it is his feet (sticking issue).

I don't know if it's the same for Wes Malott, but when I miss a ten pin a mile left, it's usually for one of two reasons: either the ball just fell off my thumb because I need to adjust tape or my hand is unusually sweaty, or I couldn't slide. It's really common for me to fight slide issues on synthetic approaches near the gutter where there's less traffic. The approaches tend to be a little tacky but nothing awful where the majority of bowlers slide, but by the gutters where very few shots are thrown, they can get really sticky.
