Title: Power Grooves????

Did you guys happen to notice that DeVaney and Rhino used Power Grooves for a spare ball? I wonder what the reason for this would have been, instead of plastic?

Probably because they're urethane. Drill it tame, polish it up, and on today's oil conditions it's practically as straight as plastic. You can play them effectively in the dry area, and some bowler's consider them as "harder hitting" than a pancake core plastic ball, and prefer to use them as a "dual purpose" spare ball / dry lane ball.
I'm using an original Faball Black Hammer (polished) in the same role in my arsenal.

I use the Chrome Yellow Power Groove for my spares. Just have to kill the shoot to go straight.

According to the In the Bag section of the PBA website, neither used a Power Groove.

Devaney had a Brunswick Groove Viz A Ball it says, and Rhino just a Target Zone. Hmmm...

RandyO~ that does make sense what you're saying though.

I know I saw Devaney using the blue/purple urethane Power Groove. There's not even such thing of a Viz Power Groove!! LOL.

I am pretty sure, though, that Page through a T-Zone. I may have been half asleep watching the matches, but i'm pretty sure I know my balls! LOL

Not to pick any nits, but the urethane one is simply the "Groove", not a "Power Groove".  I don't think they started calling them "Power Grooves" until the DISC core was introduced.  The older Grooves had pancake cores or a single puck at the bottom, they didn't have the two cylinders that the current PGs have.

I went to the "in the bag" site.  It's 2 separate spare balls they said DeVaney had in his bag.  Brunswick Groove & a CLR (thanks lsf) viz a ball. Not both jumbled together to form one ball.  C'mon guys.

it looked like devaney was using a brunswick groove for his spares. on brunswicks website a "power groove" is a reactive ball where a "groove" is a urethane ball. in the description of the groove its' colors are listed as "dark blue/light blue" and it looks like it's dull....however the description says polished. devaneys was polished.

That would be with any ball. If you noticed when Devaney missed the 10 pin on the first ball in that shootout match he turned it too much and it hooked a couple of boards at least and ended up missing it to the left.

The new Groove is polished... the old one was the same color and was dull.
