prize fund cut
« on: September 27, 2006, 10:10:05 AM »
I posted this earlier on the pba website

PBA ANNOUNCES 20% REDUCTION IN PRIZE FUNDS

Prize money on the Denny's PBA Tour will decline by 20 percent, PBA
Commissioner & CEO Fred Schreyer has just announced in a media conference
call that is ongoing.

"The message being sent is that the days of the open checkbook in the PBA
are over, and we have to be self-supporting," Schreyer said.

In standard Tour events, first place prize money will drop from $40,000 to
$25,000, and the guaranteed prize payoff for exempt players will drop from
$2,000 to $1,800.

Schreyer said the cuts were being made to ensure the long-term viability of
the organization.

Two of the Tour's four major tournaments, the World Championships and the
Tournament of Champions, also will see first-place reductions to $50,000
and $60,000, respectively.

Schreyer added that the PBA hopes to save additional money once
negotiations begin with ESPN regarding the Tour's next contact with that
network. He said cutting TV production costs also could benefit the
organization's bottom line, adding that the 2007-08 season could mark the
first season of profitability under the ownership group that took over
seven years ago.

Schreyer said the announced cuts do not extend to either the PBA Senior
Tour or the PBA's Regional program.

This doesn't have to do with the PBA but where is the money coming from for the women bowling on Monday nights on ESPN?

In the August issue of Bowlers Journal they did a cover story on the challenge. Gary Beck  put the event together.

Ah, the corporate search for the almighty DOLLAR!

Let the citizens be screwed, yet again!

Let the PBA/Microsoft dropouts join the rank of AT&T who also had a fantastic product yet gave it all away because they knew diddly-squat about marketing.

AT&T had billions, literally, in longlines (long distance telephone lines); now they are dead (SB and SWB are just using the AT&T name.)  Where Will the PBA owners soon be? and worse, yet, where will that leave all the PBA bowlers?
Answer, in the same boat with the PWBA bowlers.

Maybe the exempt format is a mistake.  Would an open field make up for the 20%?

if i was a pba exempt player i'd be a little upset about this because the new ownership/management have had plenty of time to get top flite sponsorship so prize money could increase not decrease.

I would like to think that all that is needed is to open every tournament to more entries. Compare it to "The World Series of Poker" they open the tournament to every amateur that wants to play ( they call it dead money), this way it gives the locals someone they know to cheer for, instead of the same guys week in and week out.

Looks like the PBA is still doomed.

WTF...what happened with all thier new sponsers especially Denny's? They've had more money in sponsership then they've ever had by far. Sounds like some mismanaging of funds. If anything, the headline should read "PBA ANNOUNCES 20% RAISE IN PRIZE FUNDS"

I feel so bad for the guys out there.  Only in bowling can you be among the top 64 best in your profession in the world and still make way less than an amateur.  Craziness right there.  It's no wonder there's guys that should be exempt keeping their 75k jobs and sticking to regionals on the weekends.  There's just not enough money there to warrant living on the road for 16 weeks with no garuantee to make a profit.

Look for more exempt players in the regional tours because of this. Where alot of them would take more time off, they will be forced to supplement this drop by visiting the regional tour more often when they are on breaks and after this season. To me, this is absurd also. Open the fields and try to keep the prize funds increasing and not decreasing. I agree that at this rate, the PBA will soon be in the same boat as the PWBA if things don't change. Hell, they even dropped the 2 majors from $100,000 to $50,000 and $60,000 for the win. Definately not the best of moves.

Entry fees don't cover any where near the expenses. Added money, in the form of sponsorships or center funding have to make up the difference. And it's huge. The cost of the staff, trucks, TV production, TV time, etc. are HUGE!!!

Bowling tournaments have limited participation. If the World Series of Poker gets too many entries, they just add more tables. What's a bowling center supposed to do? Add more lanes???

This is why I like the tournament I run in January. It only costs $ 100.00 and you can enter more than once to qualify. I pay back 70% of the prize money collected. I know there are more exspences involved when running a PBA event but for the "weekend warriors" I call them. its a good thing. And something else I do at my tournament is offer brackets and high game pots which gives the bowlers another opportunity to make more money. Anyway if anybody is interested in receiving an entry form please email me your address or post to this topic with any questions or comments.
