Hmmm. Sunday's Format.

It seems as though this sunday will have a different format and will be tape delayed and aired from 8-10PM on Sunday Evening.

 The final round will feature eight bowlers, the first time a Denny’s PBA Tour championship round has featured as many as eight bowlers – other than Japan Cup competition – since the 2000 season when most events featured eight bowlers.

Bowlers 5-8 will all four bowl in a "bowl-through" elimination match and the highest scorer will advance to take on the #4 seed.  It then reverts back to the normal stepladder format.  But its kind of cool because we get to see 3 more faces, and bowlers 6-8 get an extra chance at making it to the top.  I cant wait until sunday!

Not the first time in history.  That format was experimented with on CBS in the late 90's.

actually, when cbs was covering the pba telecasts in 1998 and 1999 there were four players who made it to the show-----three players bowled against each other in the "shootout round" with the winner advancing to the title match against the tournament leader. there was a time in the early 2000's when there were 8 players on the telecasts that were sponsored by espn.

I shouldn't have said in history, I mean under the new Owner of the PBA and since it was revamped and responsored.  Anyway, here is where I got the info at.

The Japan Cup used a larger 8-man stepladder, I think, until this year.  There are a few shows from the very late '90s and early 2000s that had eight people.  6-7-8 bowl, winner advances to meet 4-5.  Those three bowl, winner advances to a regular stepladder.  I think ESPN Classic has run a few of those.

The shows I liked were the Dick Webers from the mid-90s.  Four guys, three games of round-robin match play.  Top two advance to the finals.  Even with two games going on at once (three times), it didn't take too long.  There was a Duke-Kent-WRW-Ozio show in '95 or '96 that was great.  Ozio was on fire.  I'd like to see them bring that format back for the DW now that they have a few tournaments that already feature the 5-man stepladder.
