Regional winner turns down exemption

The PBA East Region awarded Ray Edwards (Middle Island, N.Y.) the Player of the Year award after he led the East Region Point Rankings although he turned down his exemption. Edwards won four titles and led the region with $17,952 in season earnings.

I heard from someone who bowls with him that he was going to turn it down. After reading about current exempt's situation, I'm not totally surpised. I know that Ray does have a well paying job. He didn't do too well with his last exemption in 2006-07 and lost it. I guess he could do better with regional's (almost $18k) and still not worry about losing his job because of the tour. He can make more money as a weekend warrior without all the large expenses of being on tour.

That's probally about 8, maybe 9 events tops. I think the PBA would frown if he tried to do that. The PBA wants someone who can make most, if not all the events.

They should market the sport better and get the low guys on the totem pole more than the equivelant of a $10/hr job at Best Buy.

I'm sorry if guys like Ray read and know where I'm coming from.  It's the hard facts and truth unfortunately.

Unless your a top 10 guy on the national tour it's probably best to stay a regional player and have a full time job.

I need to verify it but I believe you have to bowl a certain number of stops to remain exempt throughout the year so you just can't pick a choose a few.

I hope that Adidas thing goes through. I think a real big name sports company needs to sponsor the PBA for it to get anywhere close to where the PGA is. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that the PBA will be that big. All they need is to be able to have big enough prizes to give even the bottom exempt player something like 50,000 after expenses.

This is why I feel we should increase the Sanction fees $5.00 to try to save the PBA. It is sad that you need to win a title just to earn more than an average Joe job pays.

I remember when I was a kid you could live for a year if you just made the show, now you would be lucky to make it another month unless you win.

This is just sad, it should be the opertunity of a lifetime, but instead it is a joke.

I feel that the PBA has to figure out how to save itself. It's not up to the USBC to step in and save the PBA. The USBC has it's own problems and they are trying to keep the sanctioning fees down. Most people feel that the fees are too high already and now the USBC is cutting down honor awards on top of that.

The reason the USBC is cuttting back on Honor Score awards is that they have become a joke. Until some integrity is put back into the game, whether through restrictions on lane conditions or rolling back ball technology, the Honor Score awards are practically meaningless anyway. How many stainless steel 300 rings do you need anyway???

Do you really believe that? I think it all boils down to $$'s. Like I said earlier, they (USBC) are looking at cutting costs. If they keep on giving rings out each year to high average players, they will have to raise sanctioning fees.

Hey, someone has to pay for their move from Wisconsin to Texas. Let it be the guys who have a draw full of rings.

I personally am willing to pay a higher sanction fee. I would pay it even if it went up $15 or $20. Seriously, it is a one time fee for the year.

Yeah - I believe it - and it has become a joke. Of course - cost is a factor, and what I didn't state in my first post was that the two are obviously related. Since it's relatively easy to achieve these Honor Score awards, there are far too many of them earned for the USBC to keep sending them out for each and every honor score.
