everyones a choker...why
« on: December 10, 2007, 11:19:06 PM »
Why is it that everyone that routinly makes the show is eventually labeled a choker? I mean even Walter Ray doesn't win everytime he is on t.v. is he a choker? Chris Barnes has made more money in the past three touneys then most of uss will probably see in a year and we call him a choker? When you guys bowl tourneys do you win everytime? do you win everytime you are in the final four?
I know I don't, am I choker cause I don't win every time?

the majority of people that are labeled chokers get that label because they are professionals and ARE EXPECTED to hit that shot to win, not pull it or push it but flush it for the win, the same holds true for professional golfers, or nba players and free throws, if they cant hit the shot under pressure they choked, I do it all the time, need that strike to win the pot game and pull it inside, did I choke you bet.  THey are labeled chokers cause they are professionals and we as the viewing public expect them to hit the shot under pressure

I remember watching a telecast where a guy (don't remember the name) just needed 1 pin to win.  Just needed to keep it on the lane for the last ball of the 10th.  Did he do it?  NO he choked.  Dumped it off in the gutter.

That was Del Ballard, Jr. and he needed 7 pins to win.  Not long after that, when guys needed count they started chucking it up the middle.

Most of you take the definitions of people calling Barnes a "choker" very wrong. Someone who gets 2nd a lot, or just plain loses a lot on tv is not considered a choker. A choker is more of someone who cannot step up in a very important shot or frame. Someone who just folds under pressure, and cannot clutch it up. To me, this is Barnes. How many times has he done this? Thrown a great game, to where it comes down to one shot, and he just tugs it? The match with Angelo a few weeks ago, where they both were very lost. I remember Barnes having a chance to win it, and he totally pulled the ball by a mile and went high to leave a split and lose. He did it a few weeks ago (can't remember what tournament or who he was against), but he bowled a very good game, and needed something in the tenth for the win, and went light. He never was even close to going light the entire game! IMHO that is a choker. So because Malott, and WRW have many 2nds does not make them chokers. Maybe some of those 2nds they have choked it off, but not most of them.

It's ridiculous the amount of hate Barnes gets. Yes he's failed to make some shots when he's needed it but think of all the good ones he has left.
I think what everyone doesn't realize very well is the man has over 50 television appearances. That's a lot more then most bowlers would dream of and he has only been on tour for 9 years. I don't think people realize how difficult it is to get on tv. Getting to tv is nearly as good as getting a title.
Also, the man has 2 majors now so no one has the right to call him a choker.

The biggest reason these guys are called chokers is because of jealous wannabes.  Every single guy on tour has failed at a crucial time at some point, as have even the greatest league bowlers.  There is nobody in bowling that hasn't failed at a crucial time at one point.  Anybody who says they haven't is a bold face liar.  That doesn't make them chokers.

A choker would be one who fails in the clutch late frames with miserable shots game after game.  If you leave a washout in the 10th when you needed a strike to win, you've choked.  If you go brooklyn, you've choked.  If you just didn't get carry, it was just a bad break.
