richard wolfe question.......
« on: August 18, 2006, 05:11:10 AM »
just wondering if richard wolfe has signed with a ball company yet. i know when we saw him last on tour i think he was a storm staffer, i'm wondering if he may sign with them again, or maybe stay independent? with the way the lanes have been the last couple of years, he may just be able to give pa and scroggins a run for the best lefty on tour! the guy has what i call effortless revs off his hand, and besides couch, he might be the best at opening up the left side. any thoughts?

as a matter of fact i did. to be honest with you i had forgoten how smooth this guy is. it just amazes me that he hasn't won on tour yet. to watch him, if you didn't know, you'd swear he had at least 5, maybe 10 titles. just goes to show you that style alone doesn't win titles. to me it's hard to beleive that someone as unorthodox style wise as walter ray can win 41 times, but someone like ritchard with that relaxed armswing can't get enough breaks to go his way to win.

Im starting to think, controlled, not muscled swings are better than free armswing idea. You cant tell me WRW and Ryan Shafer have free swings.

This guy according to Richard Shockley has one of the best physical games in the world!

I LOVE watching this guy fling it!

northface, one thing you might want to look at with wrw and shafer is this, from pushaway to the top of the backswing, they are muscled, but the down swing is free until their release point. wrw really rips through the ball when it gets to his release point. shafer is the same way. the only time muscle is bad in your swing is when you force the ball down from the top of the swing. norm duke is a classic example of a semi-controlled armswing. notice when norm starts the ball, it is controlled untill the top, then he relaxes and the weight of the ball controlls his swing from there.

Thanks for the concise explanation. That being said, its ok to have some muscle involved in the swing as long as its not in the downswing?

Hmm. No matter how much I read, Im not sure on the free arm swing theory. I dont see how its physically possible to have a 15/16 lb object in your grasp and not muscle it one bit.

Actually, I'm not sure either, but here's a kicker for you. I'm in the midst of switching back to 16 lb balls. It seems, by feel alone, for me, that both having a free armswing and an easy thumb release is MUCH easier with a 16 lb ball than it is with a 15 lb ball. In my case, my backswing is actually much higher, my hand grip is much lighter, allowing an easier thumb release ANd my ball speed is higher.

I guess much of this is because I feel the 15 lb ball is so light that I have to ENFORCE CONTROL on it all the time. YOu wouldn't believe the death grip I put (I feel I have to put) on a 15 lb ball in order to control it. If I don't control it, the ball flies upward and it won't pull off my thumb. I have to manually release it, whereas the mass of the 16 lb ball just pulls itself off my thumb so easily and naturally.

if you are gripping the ball that hard, you are using the wrong pitches on your thumb. i have one of the highest back swings you'll find, but my pitches fit like a glove. my arm is totally relaxed on the down swing. the ball should come off your hand effortlessly. if your forcing the ball off your hand, or have to squeeze the ball to make it stay on your hand, you've got something wrong. i would say a majority of the time, people use too big a size on their thumbhole. your thumbhole in reality should be a little snug. people just don't realize how snug a thumbhole should be untill they actually try it! i've had people say to me "there is no way that ball is coming off my hand. but if done right with no muscle, the ball actually comes off cleaner with more revs than a loose thumbhole.

Parker has the ultimate game I think.  They should give him a lifetime exemption.

I saw a show with Wolfe a few weeks back and Earl Anthony was quite impressed with his physical game, as is everyone else that sees him bowl.  It really is hard to believe that he hasn't won a title yet.  I wish I could throw the ball 1/10th that good!!

Never had the backing (funds) to bowl full time on tour in the past. If he had, he would have won a title by now. Great natural physical ability!
