He looked to be a real hurting unit a couple of weeks ago.

strikecing and necro are prime examples of why bowling is dying.  They think playing the gutter is up 10 and lofting the gutter cap is versatility.

By the way strike Walter Ray lapped the field at the Cream of the Crop in Florida a few years back lofting the gutter cap, but I guess since he hasn't done it on one of the manicured patterns on TV he's not versatile.

Robert Smith is to bowling what Mark Wohlers was to baseball

For those who don't follow baseball he was the closer for the Braves when they won their World Series in 95'.  He threw SMOKE.....was clocked in the minors over 100mph.  He was consistently in the high 90s and was forced out of the game because of control and shoulder issues.

He isn't one of the best pitchers ever....he was simply a gifted athlete.  Robert Smith is a gifted athlete, but saying he is on the cusp of being one of the best ever is just plain stupid.

First Of Russell I know what it is to play the gutter I have wom tournments and have a 300 off the gutter!!! SO dont talk about my game when you have never seen me bowl!!!

Now not saying that Robert Smith is one of the best! Just saying he should be remember in History.  Just like Mike Miller for throwing two Finger!!

Being able to play everywhere on the lane is more than being able to physically throw a ball down that area.  Norm Duke has won from all angles, Walter Ray has won from all angles.  Robert Smith has only won going from way left to right.....that is not versatility.  I'm sure he can play up 5....but those weeks he hangs away from match play cuts....he bottom feeds.  I'm not saying he's not good...he's far better than I will ever be....but I just think the praises bein lofted are a little bit ridiculous.

Agreed not one of the best ever but Last year I bowled a regional and he wat there going up about 2 or 3 board on the cheetah straight up the boards and up the back of the ball most of the tournament

Robert just needs to take better care of himself.  He's gotten a pooch that grows a little more each year.  Back problems, hip problems, and joint problems do not mix well with extra weight.

I am with Russel and Scotts on this. Necro has alot to learn about bowling. Robert Smith will not even go down as a great power player, Sean Rash and Tommy Jones have already been putting numbers rivialing Smiths. I like Smith he is awesome to watch I used to take notes on his style when I was younger but he is not consistent enough to make an impact on a large scale.

Spider Man Robert Smith may have to retire soon due to a bad hip.

Sean Rash?? Cmon are you kidding? He has to do alot more before I mention him in the same breath as Robert Smith. Alot of you are not giving Robert the credit that he deserves. He's one of the most intimidating bowlers to ever roll a ball down a lane. Just ask Mike Machuga who shook his head in disbelief at the power of Robert's ball when Robert destroyed him in Omaha a few years ago. GREAT Bowler and GREAT Guy!!!

Don't know if it was mentioned but look for him in the Japan Cup on YouTube.com throwing a back-up ball up the left side of the lane, that is truly playing anywhere on the lane

Your intelligence is just astonishing.  I can only hope that you go back to school and learn how to read and write with anyone that doesn't bash their head into the keyboard.  First off, he never called you out on YOUR game, he stated that you think versatility is going up 10 or lofting the gutter.  I can tell by the misspellings of the words "off", "won", and "tournaments" that you just got such a FIGJAM urge inside yourself you had to go and post this bogus stuff.  Woot! You won a tournament and shot a 300, you've only managed to do what a couple hundred thousand people do every single year.  Congrats!  You're officially mediocre!

Ummmm....I believe it was you that started the comparison in terms of overall hooking ability!!

I am with many others on this and have stated it in other threads......bowing gutter to gutter isn't what bowling is about.  Bowling is about taking what the lanes give you and using that to your advantage.  If the lanes give you down and in....play down and in.  If there's hook...play the hook.  I don't consider lofting the guttercap as a 'line' at all.  That's my opinion......but I've never oooohed and aaaahed over power players just because they can hook from one gutter to another.

i've met robert smith at several pba stops and he is a great guy. he's also a great player. however, he comes up a little short in the versatility department to really being being considered one of the all-time greats.

I believe the reason his back is the way it is, is the reason that us two handers fear.  His lower body is not very square at the line and yet he has alot of torque on his back and hip.  I can see it plain as day.  When he was on the telecast a few weeks ago, I could see it.  His hips were pointed at a 45-60 degree angle to the foul like and his upper body was alot more square to the pins.  Another thing is that we are not too sure if it is completely bowling related or if he had another issue altogether that is now hampering his bowling ability, or at least to my knowledge.  I have a friend who bowled at FSU who has the simplest game on the planet and yet was out of bowling for about 5 years due to his back being so messed up from an auto accident.  It sucks because Robert is one of the most respected guys out there and now it may look as though he could be done for awhile.
