Fun to watch. Can't imagine trying to compete on tour when the cost is so high and the pay out is so low.

Maybe it is his last event. Retired from the actual tour as far as week in and week out across the U.S.

I think he has another full time career in the business.

I was lucky enough to meet "Maximum Bob" and enjoyed talking with him. I also wish him all the best in his future plans. However, like many other power players him game didn't really allow him to DOMINATE at the PBA National Tour level. His game is too one-dimensional and is very hard on the body in the long run. I wish him well.

I just wonder how long the PBA will be around. Seems you hear about someone leaving the tour every year.

I suspect these were one of his last things for the PBA. Plus these shows were taped a couple weeks ago.

In an interview he said he would likely bowl some of the majors but that's about it.  He's off to Hong Kong to teach.

I am surprised more have not retired. Your mailman makes more than most pro bowlers.

R5 is correct, Robbert stated he would move to Hong Kong and get involved with bowling education there.

Yes its sad to see Robert Smith retire at 37 !!!!  I read somewhere Mike Devaney would quit the Tour tommorow if he could land a full time job paying $ 13 dollars an hour !!!   I want nothing more than too see the Tour go under.  Its pretty sad to see the prize funds drop down to 15,000 for most stops.  When watching toutube videos of all these 70s and 80s telecasts and seeing the prize funds at 25,000  30,000    ( then the $100,000 TV 300 bomus )   Maybe Obama could step in and try to save the Tour ???

Mike Devaney has been broke for a couple years I heard.

As for Robert retiring that sucks but he needs to. Too many injuries to the hip and back did him in 10 years ago that causes permanent damage to his body.

Mike Devaney had been hard up for money due to several bad investments he made.

It is a shame only a few guys can make a decent living bowling.  Considering the travel cost and time they likely make very little per hour.  But they are the best at it and I respect them for that.

Ya it's like the PBA tour gives the exempt touring players a salary at least but then they took away the prize funds. $20000 dollar first place prize with this economy and inflation is ridiculous. These guys should be able to go at least halfway into match play and make a good living off the tour.

yea bowling is not dying is probly dead as a sport.
He's fun to watch.

"With this economy?"  They want to go out and compete knowing what the prize fund is, that''s on them.  Economy has nothing to do with it.  I think "darts" pays a whopping 1K per tourney, gonna feel sorry for people who enter those?  No.  Smart guys will drop out of tour, let PBA membership expire, then bowl the mega buck tourneys.  Guess what will happen?  Those will start being televised and you will get what everybody wants to see, good bowlers bowling for BIG bucks.

Megabuckd used to be televised and some of the entrants were pretty good, ie Robert Smith.

Our best bet is for the PBA to fold and lose that ludicrous deal with ESPN and move over to Versus.

And you'll see them televised again if the Tour keeps going down the road it's going.  I wonder how many people would pay $10 to watch a tourney finals on pay tv if it was on?

Non bowlers?  I doubt very many. The xtra frame crowd might.
