Robert Smith withdraws after 4 games of qualifying
« on: November 13, 2008, 02:38:48 AM »
This is pretty strange.. He is on the TV show for the Ultimate Scoring Chamionship (non-points) tourny this week and now has withdrawn from the regular 2008 PBA Chameleon Championship (points) tourny after 4 games of qualifying.. I hope he is alright..

this may be best for him. he has back and leg issues.. the rest may be good for him. you have to figure he's  bowled 25 games since sunday plus it could have been another 18 in the next 2 days. I want to see how he performs this weekend

I knew he had had some health issues over the past couple of years but thought I read somewhere that he was 100& healthy this year..

On a side note, I agree this week could be brutal on all the players with 2 tourny's happening in a such a short time..

Robert mentioned yesterday on the live stream of the TQR that he hoped he was 100% but after bowling every week he realized that he's not.  He said after his round of 8 match for the ultimate scoring championship he had to leave the bowl right away and go to the hotel and ice down for an hour or two.
He said he ices down every almost every block because there is just too much pain.

He also withdrew after 3 or 4 games of an earlier tourney this year...he said he was feeling really sore and was bowling badly and didn't feel that it was worth it.

I hope he is able to bowl the final but if he isn't what do they do?  Do they plug Sean into his spot as the alternate?

Bowlers in the Ultimate Scoring Championship earn points just like any other PBA event.

Smith has major back issues.  He is saving his back for the TV finals of the Ultimate Scoring Championship.  With $25,000 on the line for that tournament, it is best that he heals up so he can go after that rather than basically gamble his way to get lucky to make the Chameleon show.  With the way the payouts are, everyone from like 20th to 40th get $1800 anyways.

$25,000 potential vs. $1,800 potential.  Easy decision to me.

No he doesn't.  I bowl the same way and have similar issues.  My entire right side of my body is screwed up from cranking it like an insane bowler.  I don't care though.  I bowled 290 last night and won the pot for the league.

Maybe you should put your earnings into an account for the future medical bills... Sorry, couldn't resist it.

I enjoy watching Robert Smith bowl and wish him the best. I also believe that there's a price to be paid, eventually, for the "abuse" the body takes with that style of bowling year after year. Is it worth the cost? Only the bowler can decide for himself. Good luck with your right side Necromancer.

I, too, am living with the results of several sports injuries from years gone by. If I could reverse time and not have them (injuries, etc.) today it would still be a close call though...

It's the price I am willing to pay to bowl the way I do hehe.  I am pretty sure my right side from my heal to up through my back is from poor mechanics.  I also suffered a serious injury in college where I was in a wheelchair for almost 2 years.  But I'm still alive hehe.

I'm pretty sure you don't bowl similar...
You may think you do...
But ya don't...
You really know nothing about bowling do ya...

Obviously no one bowls exactly like anyone else.  Smith puts more revs on the ball than me and plays a little more to the left, but I'm much closer to his style than most of the other PBA bowlers.  I definitely don't try to bowl like Norm Duke LOL.  I would say my style is a mixture of TJ, Smith, Rash, and Pete Weber.

EDIT:  And that would explain how I can bowl 290 the first game last night and then bowl 162 and then finish with 225 LOL!  Consistent?  NO ways joses!

I think a mixture of all those guys would be pretty much the perfect bowler.
