Roll to Riches-needs a new format
« on: April 13, 2008, 12:04:53 PM »
I think its sad that Motel 6 and the PBA use a $150,000 prize fund in this way.  I'd much rather see an end of the year tournament to try and win this money.

I think they should make a final tournament with the Top 16 bowlers in points.  This will give bowlers an incentive to bowl all events and put a larger emphasis on points.

Have the top 16 bowlers bowl 25 games of qualifying (5 on each pattern).  Cut to the top 4 for television.  All non TV bowlers receive 5k.

For television, you choose the most fair pattern for all styles (probably chameleon).  You bowl round robin matches with the 4 bowlers and then the top 2 bowlers bowl 1 final game for the title.  You have two pairs for television so two matches can be going at one time.

$50k 1st
$20k 2nd
10k 3rd 4th
5k 5th-16th

This was you have a little bonus for top ranked players.

This is basically bowling's all-star game. The Tournament of Champions is supposed to serve as the kind of event you're talking about, a version of golf's Masters.

We talk about wanting to generate interest through new things; what's more interesting? A poker-style winner-take-all tournament for big cash among some of the sport's biggest guns, or just another tournament?

It also depends heavily on what Motel 6 wants to do as a title sponsor. I think the format is fine; it's literally the only thing like it on the schedule.

I guess my only problem with the Motel 6 Roll to Riches is that its such a crapshoot to win it, and its for the PBA's largest 1st place prize.  I'd consider the trick shots like the all star game.  You don't win $150k for winning an all star game.

But I guess it's Motel 6's money, so they can do what they want with it.

The problem there, then, is with the prize money in the other tournaments (which I agree are pretty crappy). But I don't want to throw RTR under the bus for that reason.

if its all about strikes they should put it on a house shot that would be fun.
