Ryan Shafer interview
« on: October 10, 2008, 06:39:18 AM »
Ouch!  Shafer doesn't get a whole lotta respect here all the time, but he sure doesn't sound very happy in the interview.  I understand where he's coming from on most of his points<semicolon> the PBA has a lot of room for improvement.

I'm glad I wasn't interviewing him.  I wonder how much editing went into the final piece.

Ryan has never been afraid to speak his opinion. He is very honest, sometimes to a fault. He's also a very passionate person about the sport and he wants nothing more than to see the Tour thrive once again. He is also one of the hardest workers out there and he never makes excuses. He is a great talent and is one of the most underrated players on tour today. I think he is very misunderstood sometimes. If people knew him off the lanes their opinions may be a little different. Ryan is one of my closest friends on tour, and reading that article i heard the pain in his voice more than disdain with the PBA.

With that being said....i could've done without the part about the Televised 300 game !!!

I had no problem with what Ryan said in the interview. He said a lot of things about the PBA that others players may be thinking but are afraid to say.

I was kind of hoping to hear about his rivalry with Duke. Good interview nonetheless.

AMEN! TO ALL OF IT!!!

Especially the part about "tantamount to NASCAR letting deer loose on the track." More like, "forcing NASCAR drivers to ride deer on the track," if you ask me.

I'm sick and tired of people crticizing Ryan for every freaking breath he takes. I've seen other summaries of that interview and all they could see in the interview was Ryan's criticisms of the PBA and the newspaper interviewing him. I see reasoned and intelligent comments responding precisely to the questions asked.

If people want to see the "bad", of course that is ALL they will focus on when trying to summarize such interviews. See my signature block:

One of my buddies out here works in the same place as Ryan's sister. Ryan has treated him to tickets and a bowling ball or two when the tour is out west.

Front row seats at a PBA telecast aren't easy to come by, but Ryan Shafer is a class act. He appreciates having a fan or two supporting him out west and my friend is happy to oblige. Intense in competition, but a very nice person and asset to the tour.

Sometimes we only see what TV allows us to see, but I've heard nothing but nice remarks about Ryan Shafer by those who know him.

Seems like an honest and nice guy, he does bowl well for his style of play. He has a unique odd ball roll but has learned to make it work on almost every pattern.

It has to big pressure to only have 20 weeks to make a 52 week living, i guess that never crossed my mind before. You slump and you can lose your house and everything pretty much, plus exemption can be out that fast.

Look at Steve Hoskins he was young when he lost exemption and the player association president at the time. I miss watching Steve he always came across as a fun and cool guy, where did you go steve??

I like Ryan's honesty in what he said in the article. I think he is a very underrated bowler on tour. The guy can bowl. He has put himself in contention to win many times. Many times more than I would ever think.

I had no problems with what Ryan said and he has a point on most counts in that interview.  I agree with Jeff, I think he shouldn't have made that comment about the 300 game.  That went a little too far.

Im so glad people are brainwashed to think that TRACK sucks. And its even funnier when im carrying with my TRACK ball and they're going flat ten with their OTHER BRANDS ball.

Modesty is out of place when it's not true. When he's earned his laurels, he has a right to crow just a little bit. He wasn't exactly "Pete Weber-ing" or "Ernie Schelegel-ing" it. (Bowlers who REALLY blow their own horns loud enough for the next state to hear them.)
