Post by: HKP on November 20, 2011, 04:18:21 AM
First Penn State, then Syracuse basketball....now the PBA ??? Why hasn't there been any announcement about the arrest last week, the firing afterwards and whats next ? Not surprised, the PBA sweeps it under the rug once again....

There's a reference to Jeff Mark no longer working for the PBA on Riggs' 11th frame blog. Anything else seems like wild speculation and borderline libel.

Do you have a link to the story or are you getting your info from elsewhere? If the guy has been charged then I think the accusations must have SOME merit. I would think it takes alot for young kids to come forward with this kind of stuff and it seems the police would want some kind of evidence before a DA would bring charges.
Apparently the 1st victim from the Penn St. scandal has had to drop out of school due to other kids treatent of him. And, if what you're reporting is true, it is even stranger that 2 kids would fabricate such things. Not something to just go around saying about someone ya know?
Anyhow, I would like more info on the story but cannot seem to find it anywhere.

agreed, some evidence or mention of the situation in the news would be much appreciated. Jeff Mark has been part of the pba since i have been alive and it would be a shame to see his career end like this.

PBA provided no further details. Rumors are not reportable by legitimate news media. I could find no news releases, arrest reports, criminal complaints, or other such legitimate information that would form the basis of a news story.
If someone were to provide such information (or a link to it), I or other bowling news media would report ... along with Jeff's response to any such charges if he would wish to provide one.
As it stands now, the only fact is that PBA says Jeff Mark no longer is an employee.
Anything else above this post is nothing more than rumor.

When Brian Kretzer was arrested for DUI/Hit and Run a few years ago, I was banned from the site for repeatedly putting up a post asking how the case was resolved. It was a legit question, but the PBA wants no hint whatsoever about criminal activities by people associated with them.

Guffnuh- that is pretty strange since that is something which usually doesn't happen. Normally adults hang out with adults, kids hang out with kids. Lord knows what was in Jeff Mark's mind when he was at the tournament you're talking about...
As for the PBA, they should just come clean and mention what's going on instead of trying to cover it up. First, it's bad enough what the PBA has done to the tour itself over the last 10-15 years and it's reputation has gone downhill. Now, there is this scandal. I think the PBA is only hurting itself long term by keeping quiet about it.
If it turns out that Jeff Mark did what is being said, he definitely deserves to be fired. That already happened. Beyond that, he needs to spend time in prison and be forced to register as an offender. In addition, I would want to see Tom Clark given the boot for keeping quiet about the whole thing in the first place. He is just as much part of the problem.

Shouldn't the PBA wait until something has been proven in court before saying anything? If they say something and it turns out it's not true they are liable. They are doing the best thing for the organization. Say nothing until something is proven.
I will also say this. I was an AAU basketball coach for 10 years. I took kids on trips all across this country and if the parents weren't with us (which they often weren't) I never let the kids out of my sight. They were my responsibility.
If it turns out he did something to these kids he deserves to be buried under the jail. If he didn't I hope he comes back to the PBA because his knowledge and commentary was an asset to the game.

Aren’t arrest records public record? If so, that should give more credence to this story.

Arrest records are NOT public records, conviction records are. There is a difference. You could be arrested 10x and never get convicted, thus you would have no criminal record to check.

Not true, once you have been arrested and processed and have your mug shot taken those records are public information. How do you think we get all these mug shots of people who have been arrested and taken to jail to be processed before posting bail or bond?

Maybe the guy didn't get arrested. Just because you walk into a police station with a clam doesn't mean they go and arrest the person on the spot. They have to do a full investigation into the allegations, and then be sure these allegations are legitimate before they would issue an arrest warrant. Especially now when anybody of any age can walk in and try to tarnish the reputation of somebody they may not like.
Nobody knows the full story about this yet, and I don't think it's up to a persons employer (PBA in this case) to broadcast anything to the public other than their employee was fired and maybe under an investigation. The police can broadcast what they find, and what the outcome is.

I was a police and courts reporter for 5 years in Madison, WI, and am now an editor who handles numerous police and courts stories every week for our websites.
In every U.S. jurisdiction I know of arrest records ARE public records. The reason is so that authorities are not able to secretly arrest and detain someone -- a common occurrence in all too many countries across the globe.
Of course, just because a person is arrested does not mean they will even be formally charged with a crime, much less convicted. Police do NOT criminally charge anyone -- that is the job of prosecutors such as the local district attorney.
We typically use something such as "arrested on a tentative charge of" or "police requested a charge of" in our stories.
If Jeff was arrested in Las Vegas, I could find no such record ... or perhaps his proper name is not Jeff or Jeffrey, which is how I searched.
