Scorpion Pattern
« on: June 05, 2007, 09:17:14 PM »
I have this Pattern next week in my PBA Experience League. Any thoughts on how to hit this pattern?

It all depends on what lane surface you are bowling on and how much traffic has hit those lanes and how new they are... but generally, depending on style of course, most people start playing around the track area with something aggressive, and then when the transition hits start making small moves to the left...

if you a cranker you could start a bit left of the track area and kind of feed it to there, but be careful to not get it out too fast or too early because the outside oil will grasp your ball and probably not have much of a return...

Have you ever bowled the USBC nationals?  ShermDawg is correct in saying that it depends on the condition of the surface, but in general, it tends to play in a similar (similar!) fashion to the USBC nationals pattern.

Longer (than house shot) with more oil on the outsides will force most bowlers to migrate their breakpoint closer to the headpin than "normal".  On the right side,  this is typically in the 10-12 board range about about 43 feet.  If you're on a pair with good breakpoint bowlers, this area will break down a bit and you'll be able to move in and throw to the area, opening up the pattern slightly.

Played placing the ball up 7 board to about 10- 12 breakpoint sort of pointing it but with a little bit of angle and an aggressive rolly ball. I was able to kill the pattern on synthetic but on wood it hooke much earlier and it was more difficult on later blocks when moving inside was difficult because of early hook.

We just played on Scorpion last night on ~6-year-old synthetics in pretty good shape.  Unlike the Viper pattern and very much like the Chameleon pattern, there was a fair amount of swing available.  I had about three or four boards at the breakpoint.  I didn't bowl super terrific but I enjoyed bowling on it.

The important part for me was keeping up with transition.  Even with just four to a pair, one of them being a lefty, the PBA patterns break down quickly and you need to make a lot of moves quickly.  Sometimes every time you get back on a lane.  The moves aren't always what you would expect on a house shot, sometimes left, sometimes back right.

I shot terrible on the scorpion last night. I get another crack at it next week. I need to make some adjustments. Making spares would help.
