He's bringing something new and fresh to the telecasts.
And, more importantly, he's making people talk about the telecasts for the whole week rather than just Sunday.
I hated the guy at first, but he's grown on me, to the point where I find him amusing, if not hilarious. I appreciate him, and I certainly give the guy props for effort to learn the sport.
Admit it, if you were asked to give commentary for some sport that seemed "off the wall" to you, like squash or badminton or volleyball, you would take little or no interest and not enjoy it. Rob, on the other hand, is having fun with it and learning more than I ever expected.
I take my hat of, and surely some of you could cut him at least a little slack.

Or Rob could call him "Wes Malott." That wouldn't be too bad.

I don't understand what some of you people want....do you want two ball reps talking about ball motion the whole time and technical jargon?
The guy has fun with it and makes it entertaining....exactly what a color announcer is supposed to do.

Well, Randy. Wes Mallot threw the ball to a break point about 40 feet down the lane at the 10 board, then the ball's core sat up and the coverstock gave it nice continuation through the pin deck. My this is entertaining. Hey, look, he threw another strike in a "strikingly" similar fashion (please don't disqualify me for trying to make this exciting with a mediocre pun). I wonder if his opponent will be able to duplicate Wes's success.
Well would you look at that? There are still various pins standing on the deck. This is probably not good. I believe the pins are the 4-6-7-10. Some people call this the "Big Four", but I'm a traditionalist, and I don't like to use such unbelievably silly slang terms.
What do you guys think!!!!???? EXCITING!?!?!

I like Rob Stone. He is the people's announcer. I'm actually tired of hearing Randy compare two balls as charcoal and a marble.
Everyone wanna hate on Rob but they will accept that a bowler is throwing a piece of charcoal down the lane and the other is throwing a marble.
LOL!

I agree Stone is like Joe the Plumber. He represents the average guy who's at the lanes b/c that's where his kids' birthday party is. And of course Pederson represents the serious bowler.

At least Rob Stone is better than the other guy he replaced. I can live with Rob's attempts to make the show interesting. At least Hambone is better than "60 feet to success!"

People,
ESPN is televising bowling. This year, for the first time I can remember, they are following the shows to conclusion and not cutting away to show the tiddlywinks championship or whatever other drivel that has been preempting bowling. However this happened, I am grateful.
ESPN is also trying to infuse some ENTERTAINMENT value to the telecasts, after all that's what the "E" in ESPN stands for. Bowling can be slow paced and boring by todays standards. Rob may not be what most bowling "purists" want, but he DOES make it more entertaining, and doing that keeps the younger generation watching. If he makes bowling sound fun enough to enough young people to get them involved in it, I say leave him be.
Our sport is on the decline, it has been for a while now. If having Rob throw up a HAMBONE, a YAHTZEE, or a BACK-TO-BACK JACKS can stir up enough youthful interest in the sport to start a revitalization of sorts, I think it can only be a good thing.
Remember, bowling isn't just a serious sport, it is also a RECREATIONAL GAME that is enjoyed by MILLIONS. Most bowlers didn't/don't get into the sport as a seriously competitive issue, they/we got into it for the fun and the challenge and the competition came afterwards. If we can get those recreational bowlers back into leagues by reminding them how fun bowling can be, wouldn't that be a good thing?
I say, let Rob have his HAMBONE, his YAHTZEE, and whatever else he can come up with to entertain the younger generation. After all, if we can't keep them interested, entertained, and involved, bowling is only going to die all the faster.
If he gets on your nerves, you can always turn the sound down.

+100...the shame of it is, if you replaced a guy like Stone with a "purist" who didn't add any entertainment value, and ratings went far enough into the crapper that we didn't have bowling to watch anymore, then these same self-righeous, self-important, keepers of the bowling flame, purist, whinisng blowhards would be the first to b1tch and moan over the loss...
Some of you guys need to get over yourselves...

I'm not a real big fan of him either, but guess what..... There's a volume &/or a mute button on your remotes. Try using it. I've played some CD's for back ground while watching. I've also just tolerated him. Get over it.

My only argument is you would never see Jim Nance calling the Masters in Golf and yelling Hambone, Yatzee or back to back jacks....Its okay to insult and make fun of bowling with Robe Stone, but not Tennis and Golf right?
I DON'T watch the telecasts because of Rob Stone AND Randy Pederson. Randy's voice characters were enough to make me cringe. If Rob Stone were so great, how come HE is not doing Golf, Tennis, Cycling, or the Olympics? How come he is stuck doing bowling?
When Michael Phelps won 8 gold medals, how often did you hear Hambone or Yatzee?
Not to argue your points ( as they seem to have merit ), I only say that Tennis and Golf are seen as traditionaly respectful and dignified while bowling isn't. That is sad, but I think it is because bowling was done by the "Blue Collar" crowd at night, in dimly lit, smoky parlors where drinking and gambling on the outcome was common, while Tennis and Golf are looked at as outdoor sports, played at clean country clubs by the "White Collar" crowd who were seen as honorable and dignified.
Bowlings reputation has ALWAYS been below that of Tennis, Golf, Swimming, and even Polo for that matter, and I am afraid it always will be. Tennis, Swimming, and Golf are looked upon as activities in themselves, to be partaken of for sport and excercise, while Bowling is looked at as something to do when the weather is too bad for Swimming, Golf or Tennis, or you just don't have anything else worthwhile to do. Hell, there's people who would rather play croquet than go bowling.
We are stuck with a second class announcer because Bowling is seen as a second class event. Until we can change that and somehow infuse the dignity back into Bowling that it had during its heyday, we will always be stuck with "second best".

I don't care to listen to either one of them. However bowling is being aired on tv so that is a big positive for me. I get a kick out of how silly they sound from time to time. Stone does say a lot of weird things but at least he is trying. Yeah he may get names wrong from time to time but oh well. Randy imho sometimes comes across that he is putting down league bowlers. Yet he still brings up good points to point out what the pros are doing and why. I guess there could be better anouncers outthere somewhere but we are stuck with them and will have to listen to them. As far as other players doing the broadcast, most of them that do not make the cut leave as soon as they can to make the next stop or head for home.

Seriously??? You think any bowling tournament has the prestige of the Masters? It's an apples and oranges comparison to make...
Once again, some of you take bowling (and yourselves) way to seriously...
-
Not to mention, do you actually WANT the boring, lifeless, whispered commentary that you get from the Masters golf match used in bowling? I, for one, do not. Bowling should be energetic and fun! Rob Stone gets pumped when people start stringing strikes -- don't you? I know I get excited when somebody strings the first six or seven!

Exactly. The golf announcers are the worst of all sports and some people on here are actually preferring that to the PBA? LOL. You'd get laughed at by every sports fan of any sport - even golfers probably. I know if I was a golfer, I'd be embarrassed by the telecast of golfing events. They are all whispering like stuck up dorks.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Stone while I was in Medford a week and a half ago. One of the players I was talking with told me that the players really like him a lot better than Dave Ryan.
and I Quote "Don't get in Dave Ryan's way out of the parking lot after the telecast!".
Where Ryan didn't spend any time around the bowlers, Stone was in town Saturday night, having a beer with the players, and chatting with the fans. He is very much a people person.

Yeah that's why I like him. He is a people's person like me. Two pro-bowlers on the telecast equals torture i.e.: Barnes and Randy or Duke and Randy. LOL!

It was obvious Dave Ryan hated his job. Denny Shriner was good with Mike Durbin because he was actually a player at one point. He competed in Regionals.
Ron Stone just is not liked period. If you went to the soccer message boards, they hate him with a passion. Rob Stone would be better served being a gym teacher at a middle school, that is the extent of his sports knowledge.
The day I respect what soccer players say is when they change the game and allow for you to use your hands. I lost all respect for them when they claim that they have the hardest sport endurance wise and no timeouts like 'fruity' football as they say. They just walk like 80% of the game and run in spirts. But to them that is 90 minutes straight of running.

I just watched an older episode of and Earl Anthony show I think it was like 2004 or 05 anyway, Dave Ryan is much worse than Rob Stone. Rob shows excitement and enthusiasm. I don't care for some of his catch phrases but I do appreciate his attitude towards the game.
-
I, for one, appreciate Rob's enthusiasm. You could tell that when he first started he was out of his element and had a lot to learn. Well, he has learned and is continuing to learn. You can tell that he wants to get better at what he's doing and do the best job he can with what he's given.
He breathes some life into the show....his excitment and his goofy terms and the joking around he does with Randy can only mean good things. Its what our sport needs to get more people watching. If you go back to the old days with announcers that made watching paint dry seem more exciting, bowling would be off the air faster than people on here complain....its that simple.
Personally, I despised Dave Ryan. He never seemed to care anything about what he was doing, he didn't know anything about bowling and didn't try to learn anything more. He sounded like an idiot and I have heard around that not many of the bowlers cared much for him.
Whether you want to believe it or not, someone like Rob Stone is exactly what bowling needs if we want it to be shown on TV for much longer. We need and exciting, excitable, enthusiastic guy who wants to have fun and make the telecast fun for those of us that watch.
If you don't like him, mute the TV...or don't watch and see how fast bowling is no longer broadcast.

i appreciate robs enthusiasm generally dont have a problem with 99% of what he does.
What i DO have a problem with is his horrible gimmicky sayings hambone, back to back jacks, etc. if he would at least cut back on them, or at least try and come up with not such annoying ones. Other than that i have no problems with him.

Rob Stone is awesome. Hambone is awesome. Yahtzee is awesome. Back to Back Jacks is awesome. The only thing not awesome is all the whining from the purists who want bowling to immitate a funeral service. Hate to say it, but the kids love the hambone. Another awesome. Keep it up ROB!!!
