I vote norm duke for...

One of the best arm swings in bowling... right up there with Barnes and Weber. I have always wondered why Norm seems to carry so much better than Walter on tv. Norms ball looks so much better going into the pocket when they're both playing out... maybe slower ball speed or different ball roll, something along those lines im sure.

Duke's carry is phenomenal because his release is one of the absolute purest in bowling.  Notice the lack of muscle on the downswing, the relaxed grip the whole way through, and the very open hand position when his fingers come out of the ball.  He gets the thumb out quickly, then the fingers almost as quickly, and just lets the ball do the work for him.  Pete Weber is the same way as far as the actual release itself goes when he's bowling well (different hand position, a LOT more axis rotation, but still the same idea, very relaxed, open hand, no hit at the bottom of the swing).  You can tell when PDW's struggling because he starts trying to make the ball hook and carry by grabbing it a little at the bottom, and that's when his ball reaction gets over/under and his carry goes down.  Be kind to the ball and the pins know it.

WRW's carry on the other hand can sometimes be poor because of his very forced, end-over-end roll.  He uses a very unorthodox release, he really comes up a lot at the line with his whole body, with a very muscular jerking motion from his arm to create extra ball speed, but he's just so amazingly accurate that he still throws a ton of strikes.  You can see a great difference in the way Duke's ball rolls down the lane compared to WRW's.

It is hard to argue with WRW's success, but I agree 100% with you Dan. His premium has been his accuracy at the sacrifice of some carry that some of the other bowlers get. Duke on the other hand challenges the lanes to pick their poison. He can and will play anywhere and score well. I really love to see him play the corner. It is so effortless, right up the back and let the ball do the work. Like Dan said no forcing of the shot. Pure is the best word.
I have over the years incorporated some of the aspects of their games, and anybody no matter the caliber, can learn from the way they attack the lanes. I used to admire the big hook and tried to cover more boards than I should have. I have since learned that in most cases "straighter is greater".

It is impossible to argue with Walter's succes, but that doesn't mean he is perfect. His obvious flaw is his unorthodox release and slight muscling of the ball, that sometimes causes carry problems.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to be even an eight as good as WRW, but he isn't perfect.
