Duke's bad ball reaction
« on: April 05, 2009, 07:14:01 AM »
I just watched it for the second time and I think his ball reaction was awful. It was either that or his line to the pocket was bad. Perhaps if his feet was 5-10 boards to either side, preferably right he would have won the tournament. In any case, the Passion looked like a wet noodle when it hit the pins. He would have been better off with one of the T Road or Shift balls then that thing he was using today.

Duke tried the Hy-Road a few shots but it was going REALLY long (he had it way shiny).

Duke was owning it before the first match-up, and when he came out between the second and third matches.  Straight up the twig it seemed from my angle.  I agree that once Barnes stepped inside, it really screwed up Duke's plan.

My feeling on Richard Wolfe's release....completely free armswing till he enters the flat spot and accelerates with an open hand!

Virtually perfect....

Reminds me of what a great golf swing looks like in that acceleration at just the right spot!

This guy....should win and win and win!  Awesome!

Richie is from my DMV area of the country.

I think his steps and approach are a litle awkward, but his armswing and release are smoooooth as butter! Without a doubt he had the best look all day on the lanes.

And I agree with most of you guys on this thread...Barnes messed up the natural transition of that lane. I cannot for the life of me, understand why he felt it necessary to try and manicure the lanes further, by moving inside and throwing the ball slower. He already had a decent look when he shot the 243!

Barnes should have won this tournament. But by messing up the lanes the way he did......he just evened out the success rate for lefties and righties.
I thought that what Barnes was trying to achieve was...the same look Ritchie had going on the left side. But Ritchie achieved his look by going with a stronger ball!

I think Ritchie had to go with a stronger ball because he doesn't quite have the revs that Barnes has.  They may be close but I thought barnes was getting it to turn the corner very well from there.

The 8 pin kept him from winning the US open.  He would have pounded Duke in the final.

Richie went to a stronger ball because the slug in the one he had been using disintegrated on him.  Guess it was a good thing, because switching to the stronger ball gave him a little miss room and I think a better look.

I still think Richie was the guy to beat...he just got unlucky and ran into Barnes, who just happend to be lined up early.

In recent years, I think of Duke's "signature" winning ball and line as a Spit Fire off the corner, not a Passion from anywhere else on the lane. Not saying it would've worked Sunday, but that's the equipment and line that I envision as being Norm's bread-and-butter.

Was Duke using a shiny passion or the overseas passion lust?  Watching the show, it looked just like the lust a friend of mine has.  If it was the lust, my friends ball goes really long and mild on the backend.

It's the same Passion that Duke's been using for several years now (including in his win in the PBA World Championship last year).  It's one of his favorite balls on oil, I've seen him throw it a couple times on fresh oil during match play on Xtra Frame.

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think overseas balls are allowed. I remember from a couple of years ago a guy blogging about bowling at a PBA event and he had taken a BVP Rampage and some overseas Storm ball, which they wouldn't let him throw.

"In the Bag" says it's a regular Passion, and I know he's thrown that ball on TV before. I would guess it was a regular Passion with some polish.
