Koff misses cut by 1 pin
« on: March 28, 2008, 06:05:18 AM »
Scroggins beat him out by 1 pin.  I guess every pin really does count.  Can you imagine going for a 4-9 or 6-7 early in the tourney and missing both pins...now you miss the cut by 1 pin.  But great bowling by the 16 yr old

One pin, again? Ugh. I was just reading this last night...

http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2007/dec/11/all-area-boys-bowling-team/
T.J. Baral has traveled more times to Las Vegas and Detroit for bowling tournaments than he can recall. Wherever the best bowlers compete, Baral tries to be there.

His extensive competition experience was a major reason he was relaxed for the Florida High School Athletic Association’s championship final — even after defending state champion Andrew Koff had set the bar so high it seemed unreachable.

Baral, a junior at Martin County, overcame a large deficit in the third and final game, stringing together the necessary strikes to earn a thrilling victory after Koff had an uncharacteristically shaky finish. For his state title, and his area-best 224.7 average, Baral is the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers Boys Bowler of the Year.

“Andrew was up 40 pins going into the sixth frame. The most I could have shot was 240-something. He was on pace for a 260,” Baral said. “No matter what, I had to put something together. I did that. I knew all he needed was a nine-spare and 8 pins (in the 10th frame) to beat me and I was like, ‘How hard could that be?’ ”

Koff hit the nine-spare, but then knocked down only seven pins on his final shot — allowing Baral to win the title.

I'm not saying I'm perfect, but he really has a problem with the pressure of the 9th and 10th frames, and the damn 10 pin.

but the fact that he is 16, and beat over 200+ card carrying PROFESSIONAL BOWLERS is amazing.

i wish I had AK's 9th and 10th frame problems when I was 16.  Andrew made a great run this week, and I for one am not surprised.. Scroggy goes +70 over 2 games to jump him..AK could've shot better, but Mike did what he had to do..every pin does count

I've wondered about his ability to seal the deal in the past. Losing the Main Event twice in the closing frames, High School states and a few other local tournaments i've seen.

But it's still amazing showing again by the kid, and it's gotta be a record for the youngest person ever to make the cut at the US Open or maybe any pro tour stop.

The kid has more talent then any youth I have ever seen and will be better then any of us that post on this forum. I am lucky enough to bowl with him in a couple months at junior world team challenge along with another youth who went far at the masters, jake peters. I think that allowing juniors to participate in these adult tourneys is gonna help us with the transition to going adult.

Not to derail this thread but my teammate Brian Valenta has made the top 24 for the 3rd time on his 3rd try. Can we please get one 2 hander on the show.

Now Koff will have something to drive him... Sometimes there are issues with young guns having too much success to early.  They kind of peak too early.  This was probably a good thing for him for his bowling future.

Just me opinion....
