So why not a Urethane Ball event?
« on: April 20, 2009, 02:14:43 AM »
Is this a viable option for a PBA event?  With the PBA looking to make televised bowling more interesting, and already having a plastic ball event, how would a urethane ball event pan out?

Never thought of it until I saw Storm's new piece; the Natural.

Any opinions?

I think a Urethane ball event would be a good idea next year.  Replace that plastic ball tournament with it.

Something like each year, they have one tournament that shows the progession of the equipment in the stages it went through.

Lane #1 has the Liberator.

Storm new urethane piece is the Natural.

I think other companies may follow suit.

Aren't there currently restrictions on the minimum weight for bowling balls?

The point of the plastic ball tournament was to show an old school versatility factor...and an accuracy contest.  What would a 10lb ball contest prove?

With 10lb balls it might as well be a contest to see how many balls can be destroyed in a single tourney.  With the speed these guys use the 10lb balls would not hold up.

I was thinking the same thing about having a urethane tourny. Myself I think it would be good. I maybe wrong but almost all of the major brands, I am going to include the WHOLE Ebonite family under Ebonite, have a urethane ball in their lineup except maybe MoRich.

I think what Jeff was hinting at was (correct me if I'm wrong Jeff) is that Manufactures don't produce/sell many it is not in the best interest $$$$ of the PBA to do such an event.  Nice idea but won't take since the demand for Urethane is so low.  Plastic worked because more plastic balls are sold then resin

I don't see the demand for plastic bowling balls being all that high either.  Most recreational bowlers use house balls.  The only people I see using plastic are for spares only and, from my own experiences, I don't see that many.

If the demand for urethane is so low, why would Lane#1 and now Storm produce them?  With more bowlers playing straighter up the boards, I feel urethane is perfect (conditions permitting).

People scoffed at the idea of the plastic ball event when it was first mentioned.

Just my opinion.

Too bad the plastic they used had the Mica/Super Flec whatever you want to call it added to the Plastic. We wondered about the scores---they were plastic with teeth. Whatever.

I liked the plastic tourny a lot and a urethane tourny would be good, too. A tourny with a standard reactive ball would also be fun. That one could be a problem though with the manufacturers who are paying the PBA in order to get their equipment sanctioned for use on the tour.

No one would participate in that tournament. The difference in weight between a 15-16lbs ball and a 10lbs ball is enormous, and many tour players would feel that it may screw up their timing.

How is plastic any more or less specialized and/or gimmicky than urethane?
