Post by: Jeff Carter on March 12, 2007, 08:14:27 AM
We are finally starting to get caught up on the journals for my website. Due to the fact that i've been without a laptop for the last 6 weeks, i got pretty far behind. The US Open report should be up later today or tomorrow. I will post a link when it becomes available

Thanks for your patience

so I got a TOUGH question for you....

noticed in your blog's the concern when the left side seems to have a advantage...but of course the week you make the show...the left side basically shut-out!

What would be your solution to this problem to make both side's fair EVERY week?

Sammy, if you've read my journals throughout the year i've stated my concerns for both sides. I dont just "complain" when the left has the advantage, i am also vocal when the left is shut out. The problem is that there is no middle ground. The left either has it or they dont.

I would really love to see the patterns force bowlers on both sides to play the lanes the same. That means when the righties have to play 5th-6th arrow, so should the lefties. The problem that i see, and this is strictly my opinion, is that the lefties either get to play left of 10 or they are "shut-out". The problem lies within the environment. If you never have to play the lanes a certain way, you arent going to be very competitive at it. Personally i have no problem when the lefties are bowling well, if they are bowling well. But when the right has hang outside of 10 and the lefties have bank off of the gutter, i have a problem.

I realize that this is a very touchy subject with a lot of people, but it's something that needs to be addressed in a bad way. The way i see it, the only solutions are :
Make the lefties cross together or at least follow each others cross
Make the patterns "non-symetrical". Theres no reason for them to by symetrical
Ban all lefties and make them play tennis !!! ( just a joke...could you imagine couch in shorts ??? )

I agree with those comments completely.

Not sure how feasible it would be but I was thinking it would be nice if they could have 3-4 lefties and righties leading the tour stops and have them play some of the lanes at the next stop to see how they play based on the standard pattern. They could then make changes to the pattern based on the feedback from these players to equalize the 2 sides.
I feel that without knowing how the lanes are typically played from week to week in the host center, it would be difficult to even things up from side to side. Obviously the age of the surface has a big influence also since the right side gets worn much faster than the left creating more memory and increased friction in certain parts of the lane.
I am thinking use some of the top regional players from the respective region  do this and give them some sort of perk for their assistance.
Another idea would be have a pre-PBA tourney a week or 2 before each tour stop at the host center put down the same pattern and see how it plays. Give the winner of the tourney a special exemption to enter the national event without going through the PTQ. I could see this drawing a large number of entries, I mean who wouldn't like to bowl a non-PBA event to have a chance to bowl with the national tour for a week. Sure would beat the spit out of the Pro-Am.

Just some ideas.

actually think the patterns should be symetrical.

bowl one on one match play...symertric pattern

re-dress for the next match.

but that would be too easy.

or as the people in charge say...impracticle!

very good bowling...and thanks for the honesty!

Having symmetrical patterns will not work well except on newer lanes. The reason being is the right side sees about 10 times more lineage from day to day and needs a higher volume of oil to overcome the friction that has been ingrained into the lane.
