pba player of the year

it would seem that tommy jones would be considered the frontrunner for pba player of the year. however, on paper it's looks like norm duke had a better all around year: here's how the two rank in several categories:

there have been other years on the pba tour when the player with the most titles did not win player of the year. tommy jones got off to such a dominant start this year it's hard not to vote for him. but norm duke was more consistent----what does everyone think ?

Steve Jaros didn't win two years ago when he had three titles to Mika's two (Mika also had the 300 game, though).  Last year, TJ lost to PA, even with four titles to his three.  So titles aren't everything.

But Duke has one title to TJ's four, including a major.  If TJ had, say, two titles or Duke had two or three, it'd be different.  But four?  Including the US Open?  The points were close, and TJ made the finals of the ToC, which doesn't award points.

I like Duke way more than TJ, but I couldn't vote for Duke for PoY, not with only one title.

No, Mika's majors were the Masters in 2000 and US Open in 2001.  He won two titles in '03-04, the Reno Open and Cambridge Credit Classic (when he threw the 300) and won PoY that year.

When PA won PoY, he was second in the Masters (behind Danny Wiseman) and second in the US Open behind Barnes.  Fifth in the ToC, and he won the World Championship.

I can see why PA won over TJ last year.  Three titles including a major, two seconds in two other majors, and fifth in the fourth major.  Plus tops in points and such.

When Mika won over Steve Jaros, who had more titles, Jaros was not in the tops of the rankings.  Besides the three titles, he had three other top-10 finishes and a mostly unimpressive season.  Were it not for winning, he'd've probably been in the 30s in points.  I can understand why he didn't make it, Mika had a MUCH better year.

TJ had a comparable season to Duke.  Plenty of TV shows, plenty of average, plenty of money, plenty of points.  Follow that with the disparity in titles, I don't see how it can be anyone but TJ.

I think Scroggins did as much damage to his chances as anyone else.  Except for a few decent games at the Masters, he bowled horribly on the TV show.  He made plenty of shows, as evidenced by his high standing in points, but when he got there, he did awful.  And missed two 7-pins back to back makes him look like a league bowler.

Yep...lots of rumors about Scroggins performance later in the year on TV!

Also...he really didn't seem to be able to get the Track balls to rev up for him...once the show started for him.  No such problem with his Strike Zone!

PS I always thought he was hanging in the ball as the season went on when on TV or using his Track stuff!  Different thumb pitch??

The PBA Player of the year has almost always been about wins.

TJ has a Major and more wins is a shoe in.

If Norm had won the TOC he had a chance but without it he is done. He probably had a more consistent year but that doesn't really count.

Scroggins, Walter Ray, Barnes not enough wins.

You can't really say TJ didn't have a consistent year.  Two finishes outside the top 25.  49th in the GEICO Classic and 60th in the DW Open.  13 times he made the top 13.  More than half the time, he was ahead of more than three-quarters of the field.

I'm not baggin on TJ he would be my pick.

But I think weekend week out Norm was a little more consistent he just didn't win enough on TV.

There is really no discussion this year.  TJ wins hands down.  I am a Norm Duke fan, but this was clearly TJs year.  The last two years you could have made an argument for other players (TJ last year - Steve Jaros the year before) but not this year.

WRW breaking the "record" (see, I can make Earl fans happy, too) would have meant multiple titles.  I don't think one title vs. four is worth putting him in the list.  PoY isn't all about titles, no, put you can't deny four of them, including the US Open.

There is no option for Player of the Year except for tommy jones

Walter isn't even in contention because he tied a "record" by winning one title

Chris Barnes had a decent year but he one a major and the extra money he won from roll to riches doesn't counted toward pba earnings so it kinda takes a hit

Duke had a amazing year making all of those shows but 1 title is going to hurt his chances

Tommy 4 titles including 1 major NUFF SAID
