League bowlers trying PBA
« on: November 22, 2005, 02:37:33 PM »
I know a guy who averages around 210-215.  He thinks he can bowl with the pros and he hasn't even bowled an 800 yet!  Only has 2 300's.  I don't know why he thinks he can compete when pros are bowling 800's on pba shots.  He is going to try a PTQ very shortly and he recently became a member.  HE was very successful in ABT tournaments and he gave that all away because he thinks he can compete.  He has even bowled 2 regionals as an amateur and failed to cash.  He says "if i didn't miss those 7 single pin spares i would have cashed"...i told him "pros dont miss 7 single pin spares!".

does anyone else know people like this?

Is the guy going to go out there and kick butt? Probably not. However, I give him credit for putting himself out there to try. It's easy to sit back and average big on a THS shot and talk like you're the God of bowling. This guy wants to aim higher and get better. Sure, he's probably going to struggle for a while, but at least he's out there trying. You can't get better unless you find ways to keep challenging yourself. If he's tossing all kinds of numbers on house shots, maybe the Tour is what he needs. For my part, I wish him well.

I applaud this guy. I wish him the best of luck. Next year I plan on trying a PTQ myself. I'm struggling at the moment but why should that stop me or him for that matter from trying something new. As for getting the membership card, I probably would have waited till I have won or at least cashed in 5 PBA Regionals.

I also say good on you to this guy.

The best way to get better is to throw yourself into difficult situations and use the "Sink or Swim" approach, I think the guy has guts for even trying it.

Not having a heap of 300's and 800's means nothing, I average 199 on similar patterns to PBA Patterns in Australia (usually a maximum 3:1 oiling ratio, which is pretty flat) and have never bagged a 300, or an 800 for that matter...

Honor scores (which would help) aren't as good as shooting decent scores consistently.

I hope he does well, all the best to him.

I know of a few Exempt pros's right now that when they come home and practice or sub in leagues, can't average 220. Their games are taylored for the 1 board of area that they get and splicing the boards on a THS doesn't cut it. I also know of quite a few pro's with Regional titles that don't have a fistfull of 300's and 800's. 800's and 300's don't mean crap on today's THS. A Friend of mine has 12 800's already this season in 5 different houses. The same guy has quite a few 300's this year but he can't do crap in the regional's.

I had made the decision to try a TOUR SWING (PWBA) before I ever shot 800. Of course, I shot my only sanctioned 800 during the period of time I would have been on tour - sigh...

But I give HUGE kudos to the guy for trying. You have to take it in baby steps.
First bowl in some regionals, get your butt kicked - keep coming back till you cash. Then bowl in some PTQs, get your butt kicked - keep coming back...

You can't face immediate success out of the gate.

I kept stats the year I was PWBA NW Region Rookie of the Year. I made the finals in every tournament - but each tournament I won more matches in the finals, and my average per tournament kept going up. But was that my first season? NOPE.

I will admit that I've seen some very good bowlers regardless of average on THS.  IF I had the money and time, I would consider bowling a couple of regionals just for the experience.  I honestly don't think it would hurt any league bowler.  Just keep the expectations low...
