Stives is Spectacular
El Paso, Texas - January 13, 2005

Amateur Bobby Stives shot a 1,853 seven-game pinfall for a 264.71 average to lead the first block of qualifying in the round of 64 Thursday in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) El Paso Classic at Oasis Lanes.

Stives, who is the General Manager of Oasis Lanes, nearly broke a PBA Tour record for six-game total pinfall, as his score of 1,618 through six games was just 17 pins shy of the all-time record of 1,635.

“I don’t think I have an advantage because the way they lay down the lanes is special for PBA Tour events. I have never bowled on this (oil pattern) before, so if anyone has an advantage it’s the PBA guys,” said Stives, El Paso, Texas, who helped open Oasis Lanes just a month and a half ago. “I’m not concerned about staying in the lead, just the top 32. I just have to stay focused and not let up or they’ll pass me by.”

Stives advanced to the round of 64 by finishing as the highest amateur in Wednesday’s PBA Tour Qualifying Round.
Patrick Allen, Tarrytown, N.Y., also came close to breaking the six-game pinfall record, as he shot 1,617 through six games. Allen, who shot one of five 300 games in the session, is 4th, with 1,814. Eugene McCune, Munster, Ind., and Hugh Miller, Seattle, also shot 300 games and are 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Walter Ray Williams Jr., Ocala, Fla., who is looking to tie the PBA Tour record for career titles with 41, is 5th, with 1,791.

The second block of qualifying starts tonight at 6 p.m. The top 32 bowlers, based on 14-game total pinfall, will advance to Friday’s round of 32.

Friday’s rounds of 32, 16 and 8 feature single elimination, best-of-seven games match play and begin at 10 a.m. MT.

The final four will bowl for the $40,000 top prize and an exemption for the 2005-06 PBA Tour season on Sunday. ESPN will air the final round on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. MT.

If any of those ripping Traber a new fanny orifice could throw better than 1759 for seven games, they'd have merit.

The center is brand new too, so the surface is probably going to be really clean and no "garbage" spots on the lanes. Scores should be high.

The EL PASSO CLASSIC BRACKETS for ROUND of 32 are posted on PBA.COM.

Everyone that was in the GEICO round of 8 made it to the EL PASSO CLASSIC round of 32 (except for MIKE EDWARDS) .. wouldn't it be something if it is a REPEAT for all 7 bowlers!
